Blondie - Debbie Harry Explains Olympics Snub

Blondie star Debbie Harry has further addressed the furore surrounding the band's decision not to perform at the Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, insisting the group has too many gay friends to play in a nation where anti-gay propaganda laws have been passed.

The Call Me rockers revealed they turned down the chance to perform at Friday's (07Feb14) Opening Ceremony over the weekend and encouraged fans to share a photo of the group's official Olympics offer with the words 'Pass human rights' scrawled across it in big black letters, which they posted on Harry's Twitter.com page.

And in an interview with the Huffington Post on Monday (10Feb14), Harry elaborated on the protest, adding, "Blondie has always been a part of the downtown community in Nyc, with many, many friends who represent alternative lifestyles. We feel very strongly about these friendships and associations, and don’t feel good about participating in a situation where biases and prejudices are paramount."

Last year (13), Cher reportedly turned down an offer to be an ambassador for the Olympics and "open the show" because of her opposition to anti-gay legislation in Russia and Ellie Goulding recently announced she would not be performing in Russia until laws changed.
