Death Grips - Death Grips' No-show At Chicago Club Was A Prank - Report
Death Grips' no-show at a nightclub in Chicago, Illinois on Friday (02Aug13) was a stunt, according to a report.
The hip-hop band was due to perform at the Bottom Lounge venue prior to their headline set at the Lollapalooza music festival the following night (03Aug13), but fans erupted in anger and trashed the group's equipment when the rappers failed to appear.
They subsequently axed their Lollapalooza slot, but new reports suggest the incident was a prank.
Reports from news website Dnainfo.com suggest Death Grips did not intend to play the club show and the stage set up - which included a backdrop projection of a suicide note attributed to the band and looped Death Grips music - was meant to be the evening's 'performance'.
Erin O'Neal, marketing director for Bottom Lounge, tells Nme.com the band's manager has confessed the band never intended to show up for the gig.
O'Neal says, "It appears to us that despite having a signed contract, they never intended on performing (on Friday) night and instead wanted to leave a room of disappointed fans. It's unfortunate that this was what Death Grips wanted to do with their fans' time and money."
The same stunt was reportedly planned for a show in Boston, Massachusetts on Tuesday (06Aug13), but promoters cancelled the booking when they learned of the band's plans.
Death Grips performances in New York, Baltimore in Maryland, and Montreal, Canada have also been cancelled since Lollapalooza.
