Chris Fountain - Coronation Street Star Unmasked As Rape Rapper
British actor Chris Fountain has been suspended from longrunning U.K. soap Coronation Street after he was unveiled as a masked rapper who bragged about raping women.
The 25 year old, who plays Tommy Duckworth on the beloved show, posted several vile videos on YouTube.com under his hip-hop alter-ego The Phantom and spat out expletive-filled verses about stabbing rivals with "diseased" needles, setting their houses on fire and raping women in their homes.
Fountain was filmed at a string of meetings for British rap collective the West Yorkshire Cypher, obscuring his face with a black and silver mask and a hooded top, but his identity was revealed to reporters from Britain's The Sun who alerted bosses at Itv, the network behind the show.
The star was suspended from the show on Thursday night (15Aug13) and released a grovelling apology which reads, "I would like to sincerely apologise for any offence I have caused. I am deeply ashamed by the lyrics and very much regret my behaviour. The videos were made over a year ago when I was experimenting with music and I've not done anything like it since. Nor will I."
A spokesman for Coronation Street added, "Itv find the language used and the views expressed in this video to be totally unacceptable. Chris Fountain has been suspended pending further inquiries into this matter."
Fountain's actions have also been slammed by bosses at a sexual violence charity, who condemn his behaviour as "absolutely shocking".
Fay Maxted, chief executive for The Survivors Trust, says, "This is absolutely shocking. He is a high profile character. It shows a complete lack of respect, regard and understanding of the crime of rape. This guy is trying to trivialise it. He should know much better."
