Dj Avicii - Concertgoers Hospitalised After Avicii Gig

Dozens of concertgoers were hospitalised following Swedish Dj Avicii's gig in Boston, Massachusetts on Wednesday night (25Jun14).

The Wake Me Up hitmaker brought his True Tour to the TD Garden venue but his gig descended into chaos as audience members fell ill. A number of ambulances were called to the scene and around 50 revellers were treated by paramedics on site. Another 36 were taken to nearby hospitals, according to the Boston Globe.

Gig-goer Roisin Saratonion, 18, tells the newspaper, "It was just too crazy in there.... You get really hot in there and you just pass out. You couldn't breathe. It was claustrophobic. People get dehydrated."

Authorities believe many of the cases were caused by dehydration, while Boston Police Deputy Superintendent Mike Bosse suggests alcohol and drugs could have played a part, adding, "There may have been some illicit drug involved, but none have been identified."

A spokesperson for Live Nation, the promoter behind the show, says in a statement: "Based on early reports from the venue it appears the majority of the transports were people outside the venue who were too impaired to be allowed inside the venue and access to the concert. Out of an abundance of caution, they were transported for medical evaluation and assistance."

Avicii, real name Tim Bergling, writes in a post on Twitter.com, "Just hearing the awful news abt (about) tonight. It's a terrible thing, I rly (really) hope everyone is ok! My thoughts go to those affected & their families."

A similar incident occurred at the Dj's show at the Rogers Centre in Toronto, Canada last month (May14), when at least 29 revellers were taken to hospital for drug or alcohol-related illnesses, according to The Toronto Star newspaper.

Avicii's gig on Wednesday marked the star's return to the Boston stage after he was previously forced to postpone the concert and the rest of his U.S. tour dates originally slated for April (14), when he underwent an operation to remove his gallbladder and appendix.
