Sir Christopher Lee - Christopher Lee to receive BFI Fellowship

Sir Christopher Lee will receive the BFI Fellowship at the 57th annual BFI London Film Festival.

The 'Lord of the Rings' actor will be honoured by the British Film Institute for his services to cinema over the course of eight decades when he collects its highest accolade at the annual BFI London Film Festival Awards ceremony on October 19.

He said in a statement: ''It is a great privilege to be included amongst such a distinguished group of predecessors who have received this Award from the BFI.''

The 91-year-old star has acted in more than 250 films, among which include the titular role in 'Dracula', the role of Count Dooku in the 'Star Wars' prequel trilogy and Saruman in Peter Jackson's 'Lord of the Rings' and 'The Hobbit' trilogies.

BFI CEO Amanda Nevill added: ''The BFI Fellowship is awarded to those at the pinnacle of their profession. It is a truly illustrious moment to be honouring Sir Christopher Lee for his enormous and unique contribution to film during a Festival that is committed to excellence.''

The London-born actor also received praise from the Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, who said: ''Congratulations to Sir Christopher on being awarded this distinguished accolade for a film career that has been genuinely iconic. As the BFI London Film Festival gets underway, with a wonderful array of films from around the world, it's a good time to celebrate great British film and film talent.''

Lee follows in the footsteps of last year's recipients, director Tim Burton - with whom he has worked numerous times - and Helena Bonham Carter.

The BFI London Film Festival takes place between October 9 and 20.
