Divinyls - Chrissy Amphlett Memorial To Go Ahead

Officials in Australia have approved plans to name a road in Melbourne after late Divinyls frontwoman Chrissy Amphlett following a campaign by fans.

The I Touch Myself hitmaker died last year (13) at the age of 53, following a battle with breast cancer and multiple sclerosis.

More than 7,000 devotees campaigned for a street to be re-named in her honour, but the original proposal for a Chrissy Amphlett Lane was rejected because regulations state that only surnames can be accepted.

The proposal was changed, and this week (beg01Sep14), Melbourne City Council officials unanimously approved plans for a road in the heart of the city to be named Amphlett Lane. The site is close to the former Palace Theatre where the rocker once played.

Councillors said they wanted to recognise Australia's "first lady of rock", adding, "Chrissy's career began in Melbourne in the late 1970s and her history with Melbourne is long and colourful... she was christened at Collins Street Baptist Church, and worked at legendary Collins Street boutique... Chrissy and Charley Drayton also signed their Marriage Licence in the Princess Theatre".

Melbourne councillors previously approved a lane to honour Australian rockers Ac Dc in 2004.
