Cbs Ratings Way Up Despite Blackout

Appearing to give CBS greater leverage in its dispute with Time Warner Cable over retransmission consent fees, the latest weekly Nielsen ratings gave CBS a commanding lead among total viewers and among the 18-49 age group, the group regarded as most important to advertisers. Today's (Wednesday) New York Times observed that last week's CBS ratings were up a whopping 34 percent over the same week in 2012 among total viewers and up 20 percent among the 18-49 demo. But while revenue from advertisers may be little harmed by the continuing blackout of CBS programs on Time Warner Cable, CBS is no longer receiving retransmission fees from the cable operator. And its owned-and-operated stations in New York, Los Angeles, and Dallas are taking the brunt of the fallout from the stand-off. MediaPost.com reported late Tuesday that in New York, which is in the midst of a heavily contested mayoral election, all but one of the candidates have bypassed WCBS-TV. Time Warner Cable is the dominant cable provider in the city. For the week, CBS averaged a 3.6 household rating and a 6 share. ABC followed with a 2.8/5, edging out NBC with a 2.7/5. Fox trailed with a 1.8/3.

The top ten shows of the week according to Nielsen Research:
1. Under the Dome, CBS, 6.4/11; 2. America's Got Talent (Wednesday), NBC, 6.2/10; 3. The Bachelorette, ABC, 6.0/10; 4. 60 Minutes, CBS, 5.7/11; 5. America's Got Talent (Tuesday), NBC, 5.5/9; 5. Bachelorette: After the Rose, ABC, 5.5/9; 7. NCIS, CBS, 5.4/9; 8. The Big Bang Theory, CBS, 4.3/8; 8. Unforgettable, CBS, 4.3/7; 10. Big Brother 15 (Sunday), CBS, 4.2/7.
