3d Movies Struggling

In an article about the collapsing box office for 3D films, the New York Times asks, Are there any thrills left in what was supposed to be Hollywood's medium of the future? The article points out that many moviegoers are steering clear of 3D screenings and that films such as Turbo and The Wolverine have taken in 30 percent or less of their overall receipts from 3D ticket sales. RealD, the principal supplier of 3D technology to theaters reported a net loss of $1.5 million in its first quarter ended June 30 versus a net profit of $2.9 million during the same quarter a year ago. Nevertheless, the Times reported, Hollywood has plans to produce at least 60 more films in 3D between now and 2016, some of them quite intriguing and potentially thrilling, including the upcoming Gravity, directed by Alfonso Cuarón and starring George Clooney and Sandra Bullock; the reprocessed-for-3D Wizard of Oz; and a documentary by Wim Winders about architectural masterpieces that includes one segment directed by Robert Redford.
