2 Guns Shoots To The Top With $27.4 Million

This weekend's two new films, Universal's 2 Guns and Sony's The Smurfs 2 each sold fewer tickets than expected, but the overall box office was up some 15 percent over the comparable week last year, as holdovers experienced modest drops. In first place, 2 Guns, the action film starring Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg, hauled in an estimated $27.4 million, about $3 million below what tracking studies had indicated it would make. The Smurfs 2 came away with $18.2 million, to place third behind the second week of Fox's superhero flick The Wolverine, starring Hugh Jackman, which collected around $21.7 million, bringing its domestic total to $95 million. The Smurfs 2 had a far more welcoming reception overseas -- after all, they were born in Belgium, and their first film amassed $420 million internationally. The new one opened in 43 markets and ended the weekend with $52.5 million -- nearly three times what it took in in North America. In fourth place, the Warner Bros. horror flick The Conjuring showed remarkable staying power (for a horror flick) in its third week. It brought in $13.7 million -- enough to lift it past the $100-million mark to $109 million. Rounding out the top five was Universal's Despicable Me 2, which added another $10.4 million to its overall domestic gross which now stands at $327 million.

The top ten films for the weekend, according to studio estimates compiled by Box Office Mojo:
1. 2 Guns, $27.4 million; 2. The Wolverine, $21.7 million; 3. The Smurfs 2, $18.2 million; 4. The Conjuring, $13.7 million; 5. Despicable Me 2, $10.4 million; 6. Grown Ups 2, $8.1 million; 7. Turbo, $6.4 million; 8. Red 2, $5.6 million; 9. The Heat, $4.7 million; 10. Pacific Rim, $4.6 million.
