British rocker Sting surprised a group of schoolchildren in his hometown on Friday (22Mar13) by dropping in on their music lesson.
The Fields of Gold hitmaker visited Hawthorn Primary School in Newcastle, north-east England in support of a project which gives youngsters access to music tutors and instruments.
Pupils at the school have benefited from the In Harmony Sistema England scheme, and Sting watched as the students showed off their skills.
He says, "I wish I'd gone to Hawthorn School, as I'd be a better musician today. I'm delighted to be here to see the results of this excellent music program."
Sting has also donated money to fund construction of a music room at the school, and headteacher Judy Cowgill adds, "We were delighted to have the chance to say thank you to Sting for his contribution to our music cabin. We couldn't manage without it and it has very quickly become the most important room in the school. I hope he was as amazed as we are at the progress the children have made in the last few months. They are on their way to becoming real musicians."
