Sting is being awarded an honorary degree at Newcastle University today (05MAY06) - and he will be given the title of Doctor of Music (DMus) at the ceremony. The former The Police frontman will collect the academic honour at the prestigious institution, which is local to his birthplace in Tyneside, north-east England. The 54-year-old ROXANNE star is to be honoured along with six other people, including ex-Northumbria Police and Metropolitan Police boss LORD STEVENS, who has been leading the inquiry into the death of DIANA, Princess Of Wales. The registrar of Newcastle University, DR JOHN HOGAN, says, "The seven individuals being honoured, with their many achievements, have contributed to the reputation of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and the north-east as a thriving centre of creativity. "The university is honoured that they have accepted our wish to celebrate them."
