Lift Review

OK
This Sundance-played look at the life of a shoplifter is above par when it's focusing on Niecy's (Kerry Washington) life of crime, but her family drama (pregnant out of wedlock, abrasive mother, etc.) is run of the mill at best. Unfortunately, the engaging moments are far outweighed by urban cliches, though Washington is a charismatic lead.

In Too Deep Review

Terrible
The only thing "too deep" about this movie is the apparent lack of respect its creators must have for audiences -- it is literally an insult that such an abysmal failure has made it to market. In Too Deep has to be the unfortunate vehicle conceived to sell an equally worthless soundtrack, the product of some greedy forces who seek to profit from a story that regularly detours gratuitously senseless violence on its course to complete disappointment.

Jeff Collins (Omar Epps) is a recent Police Academy graduate. His first assignment is to infiltrate the city's largest narcotics ring and take down druglord Dwayne "God" Giddens (LL Cool J). In order to get close enough to God and make an arrest, Collins [alter ego J. Reed] is forced to plunge further and further into criminal activity himself. Clashes with the Captain (Stanley Tucci) over crossing the line between effective undercover work and unjustifiable violence, and a love affair (Nia Long), are mandatory sub-plots in the formulaic script. Every element of the story is underdeveloped and flat, none providing additional value or even distraction. It's too bad that Omar Epps' solid performance is buried almost as deeply as the pool queue God uses to torture a victim during one of his outbreaks.

Flight Of The Phoenix Review

Weak

There are bound to be very few surprises in a movie that gives away its ending in the title. A remake of a 1965 Jimmy Stewart movie in which the survivors of a desert plane crash build a new makeshift aircraft from the wreckage of the old one, "Flight of the Phoenix" has no surprises at all.

From a guy showing pictures of his wife and kid (uh oh) before the doomed cargo plane even takes off to ferry workers home from a shut-down Gobi Desert oil rig, to the personality clashes as social order disintegrates, to the inspirational speeches that bring them all back together, everything in the story comes pretty much on cue. Even the band of desert marauders who turn up to threaten them arrives just in time to kick off the third act.

"Baby Boy"), the rig's project leader and token female (Miranda Otto, "Lord of the Rings"), the corporate stooge who shut her down (Hugh Laurie, Fox TV's "House"), and a gritty cultural cross-section of rig workers.
