Singer Stevie Nicks wishes she had spent more time getting to know her mum before she unexpectedly passed away in 2011.

The Fleetwood Mac star's homemaker mum, Barbara, died of lung disease at the age of 84 and Nicks admits she took the news especially hard because she wasn't prepared to say goodbye.

She tells U.S. Tv host Oprah Winfrey, "My mum just passed away in December. She got emphysema and pneumonia and she passed away very unexpectedly, and so I thought I had years left to ask her all those questions that I wanted to ask her, and then she was gone and I didn't get to.

"It wasn't because I didn't want to sit down with her and talk to her about her life, it was just because I didn't think she was going anywhere.

"I have really been soul searching about the fact that there's a lot of stuff that I'm never gonna know because I didn't sit down with her and ask her. And that's been a very hard lesson for me. So my advice for everybody that still has their parents is, make sure you sit down and talk to them... because you really lose out if you don't.

"Time waits for no one and things can end tomorrow. So if there's stuff you wanna know, find out."
