Donovan is an insurance lawyer was finds himself flung deep into the espionage battle during the 1960s as he fights for the release of a downed U2 spy plane pilot who was shot down over Russia.

Through back-channel negotiation, Donovan pushes for the swap of pilot Gary Powers, played by Austin Stowell, with Rudolf Abel, played by Mark Rylance, a suspected KGB spy who Donovan originally defended in a US courtroom in 1957.

Based on the 1960 U-2 incident and non-fiction novel of the same name by Giles Whittell, Donovan feels the full force of his home country as he pushes for a deal with the Soviets that the Americans don't want.

After almost a three-year hiatus as the man at the helm of a movie following 2012’s Lincoln, Spielberg’s trailer does not disappoint and paves the way for a more prolific stint from the director that includes Roald Dahl’s The BFG and Ernest Cline’s Ready Player One.
