Funnyman Steve Martin was left bitter and bruised after his father whipped him as a child.
The actor/writer/comedian has revealed all about his tough upbringing in Texas and California in his upcoming autobiography Born Standing Up.
Martin admits his violent dad, Glenn, would beat him with a belt during rages.
And there was one beating Martin will never forget: "The next day, I was covered in welts and wore long pants and sleeves to hid them at school."
The beatings continued, leading to years of estrangement once Martin left home.
He writes, "Only the most formal relationship would exist between my father and me, and for 30 years, neither he nor I did anything to repair the rift."
