Steve Jones has blamed his "rude" 'x factor' manner on "screaming" producers.

The Welsh TV presenter - who has hosted the Fox show throughout its debut season in the US - joked he will have "hearing damage" by the time the series draws to a close because showrunners are always instructing him to "shut up" judge Paula Abdul.

He said on 'The Ellen Degeneres Show': "I'm wearing an earpiece and there's about five people screaming, 'Shut Paula up. Shut her up now. Move on'. I'm going to have hearing damage in this ear by the end of series.

"I feel terrible because I feel on occasions I'm coming across as rude and abrupt and that's really not me. I cherish every word that comes out of Paula."

Steve also joked that he wishes at times the outspoken judge - who is joined on the panel by show boss Simon Cowell, Nicole Scherzinger and L.A. Reid - had an "off button".

He added in an interview with Ellen DeGeneres: "She just talks and talks and talks. Doesn't she? Where is the off button on this woman? Off, next please. You know?"
