CROCODILE HUNTER star Steve Irwin will be remembered at a public memorial service next week (begs18SEP06). The ceremony honouring Irwin, who died last Monday (04SEP06) after being stung in the chest by a stingray while diving on the Great Barrier Reef, is being organised by family and friends and will likely be held in Brisbane, Australia. Irwin's best friend WES MANNION says, "Because the family really appreciate the outpouring of love and kindness from everyone... we are planning to have a public memorial next Tuesday or Wednesday at somewhere like Suncorp Stadium (in Brisbane)." The news of Irwin's tragic death shocked the world and sparked a huge outpouring of grief, particularly in his homeland Australia. However, his manager John Stainton wants the public memorial service to be a celebration of Irwin's life. Stainton says, "Steve would not have wanted us to have everyone around crying and saying how sad it was." A low-key private funeral attended by family and friends went ahead in Queensland, Australia on Saturday (09SEP06).
