Steve Carell comedy Evan Almighty has laughed its way straight to the top of the U.S. box-office with a $32.1 million (GBP16.05 million) opening weekend gross.
The sequel may have debuted at number one, but it took less than half the $68 million (GBP34 million) its predecessor Bruce Almighty, starring Jim Carrey and Carell, opened with in 2003.
Another new entry in second place is 1408, starring John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, which took $20.2 million (GBP10.1 million) over the weekend (22-24Jun07).
Dropping two places to number three, Fantastic Four: Rise Of The Silver Surfer made $20.15 (GBP10.25 million), while Ocean's Thirteen is at four after a $11.3 million (GBP5.65 million) haul.
Rounding out the top five is comedy Knocked Up with $10.6 million (GBP5.3 million).
