'Despicable Me 2' was the most gifted home entertainment release over Christmas 2013.

The comedy stars Steve Carell, who lends his voice to Felonious Gru, and Kristen Wiig, as Gru's love interest, and was one of the most popular films over the festive season.

This was followed by 'Monsters University' in second, 'Breaking Bad' in third, 'Mrs Browns Boys' in fourth and 'Man of Steel' in fifth, according to the British Video Association and Official Charts Company.

The first family-friendly film, which was released in 2010, made $543 million worldwide, but the 2013 sequel has grossed $935.8 million worldwide since it opened last summer, gaining a cult following amongst children and adults alike.

Universal Pictures recently announced fans will have to wait three years for the next instalment of the franchise with 'Despicable Me 3' scheduled for release on June 30, 2017.

Meanwhile, a 'Despicable Me' spin-off is already in the works called 'Minions'. The movie, which stars Sandra Bullock, will be centred around the history of the yellow creatures and follow their journey in the 1960s to find a new evil master.
