Pavement Eyeing Comeback For Tv Show

Pavement Stephen Malkmus

The indie rockers, fronted by Stephen Malkmus, split in 1999 after 10 years but staged a reunion tour in 2010 before disbanding again.

Now they are eyeing another return to the spotlight after TV host Stephen Colbert asked them to appear as guests when he takes over from David Letterman as presenter of The Late Show in September (15).

The band's percussionist Bob Nastanovich says, "Pavement's supposed to play. If we can get it all together, we've been invited to play on the new Colbert show in, like, September. So that might be cool. Hopefully it'll come off, right now it seems kind of 50/50...

Stephen Malkmus - Wig Out At Jagbags Album Review

Although it seems inappropriate to use a word like 'legend' to describe a man who has been actively dismissive of any mainstream acceptance for over 20 years now, there is a strong case to be made that Stephen Malkmus is one. Whether with Pavement, Silver Jews or, as he is now, with his Jicks in tow, nobody quite sounds like Malkmus and that is once more the case on his sixth album with the Jicks, 'Wig Out at Jag Bags'.

Stephen Malkmus - Wig Out at Jagbags Review

Over the course of his solo career, Stephen Malkmus has experimented with two fairly distinct styles; either wading through lengthy, wailing, psychedelic guitar freak-outs or putting in solid, quirky pop turns. 'Wig Out at Jag Bags' focuses more on the latter sound, but there does seem to be a little more crossover between the flavours than on previous releases, most notably on the album's opening number 'Planetary Motion', which has jam band tendencies condensed inside a three minute pop song which shifts effortlessly between staccato and smooth vibes, with a great deal of that trademark guitar noodling in between.

There is a lot of Malkmus weirdness going on in 'Wig Out at Jag Bags', such as the dissonant, rumbling 'Shibboleth' and the all-out attack that is 'Chartjunk' which culminates in a breath taking guitar solo. You cannot really talk about a Stephen Malkmus album without mentioning the lyrics and there are plenty of classic couplets on offer here, including the rhyming of "Hades" with "Slim Shadies", but the real magic here is in the music.

Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks Releasing Own Ice Cream Flavour

Stephen Malkmus

Oregon rockers Stephen Malkmus And The Jicks have scored their own flavour of ice cream to celebrate the release of their new album.

Bandmembers have teamed up with bosses at New York's Momofuku Milk Bar to create the frozen treat, which has been named Cinnamon and Lesbians, after their track of the same name.

Full details of the dessert's ingredients have yet to be revealed, but it will be served up to fans from early January (14) for a limited time to coincide with the release of their album Wig Out At Jagbags.

Pavement Reunion Tour In Doubt After Troubled Vegas Gig

Pavement Stephen Malkmus NME

Cult rockers Pavement left fans at their Las Vegas concert baffled on Friday (01Oct10) when frontman Stephen Malkmus hinted the reunited band's appearance would be their last.

The group reformed earlier this year (10) to play their first live shows in just over a decade following their 1999 split, but their disjointed performance at the Pearl Ballroom in Sin City's Palms Casino appeared to signal the beginning of the end for the California rockers.

Pavement's 18-song set, part of the 21st anniversary celebrations for independent label Matador, was marred by sound problems throughout, prompting axeman Scott Kannberg to kick his monitor and bash his guitar into his amp in frustration, reports NME.com.

And Malkmus suggested the troubled show, in which the five-piece barely acknowledged one another onstage, would be Pavement's final gig together.
