BOYZONE star Stephen Gately could have become the band's most successful solo singer if he'd shown more ambition when the group split, according to his former manager Louis Walsh.

Boyzone hunk Ronan Keating has since established himself as a mega-selling artist, but music svengali Walsh is convinced Stephen would have attracted a larger fan base, because he always got the loudest cheers during the boy group's gigs.

He says, "Some nights Stephen would get bigger applause than Ronan. He was great on stage, but he didn't seem to have Ronan's ambition or drive.

"When they went solo, Ronan said to me you can only manage one of us, so obviously I went with him because he was the person I was pushing all along.

"But Stephen was a really nice guy, just unsure of himself."
