While according to Star Wars lore, James Earl Jones was paid only $9,000 in 1977 to provide the voice of Darth Vader in George Lucas's original film ( Star Wars A New Hope ) Jones himself said on Thursday that he received even less than that -- just $7,000. Appearing on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to promote his current appearance in the Broadway stage version of Driving Miss Daisy , Jones said that his Star Wars salary "was big money for me in those [days] -- I was broke." Asked by Fallon where he had any idea at the time that the movie was going to be as huge a success as it became, Jones replied, "No. Had I had an idea, I would've gotten a better contract." Star Wars lore also has it that he declined to have his name appear in the credits of the movie, feeling that his contribution didn't merit screen credit.
