Once Christmas Day is over and done with, there's always that disappointing anti-climax. You can no longer fake enthusiasm for the unwanted gifts, and the kids have already broken all their new toys. What's more, the same films as last year plague the TV set until you want to gouge your eyes out at the sight of 'Gremlins'. So what better way to enjoy the post Yuletide season than with a trip to the movies?

Star WarsStar Wars returns this December

We're not saying you need to stay in the Christmas spirit by catching up on the latest seasonal movie, but there's some pretty exciting new releases coming this winter to round off the year with a thrill.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens - Obviously top of our list. This long awaited sequel hits theatres just before Christmas so we're pretty sure going to see this would be the best present ever. Directed by J.J. Abrams, it's the follow-up to 1983's 'Return Of The Jedi' and comes 10 years after the release of 'Revenge Of The Sith'.

Snoopy And Charlie Brown: The Peanuts Movie - Another blast from the past with to come with 'Peanuts'. The long-running Charles M. Schulz comic strip comes to the big screen for the first time, bringing a new adventure starring Charlie Brown and his beloved pooch Snoopy. 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' may be unforgettable, but this update is definitely worth a chance.

By The Sea - Angelina Jolie's latest movie which she both directs and stars in alongside Brad Pitt has received rather a lot of undue criticism recently, described by many as a 'vanity project' for the couple. On the other hand, these are Oscar winning stars bringing a very real story of a tumultuous relationship to life - and who better to do it, really?

Victor Frankenstein - Okay, so 2014's 'I, Frankenstein' wasn't exactly a masterpiece, but the difference with 'Victor Frankenstein' is that it sticks more to the tried and tested Mary Shelley story, though rather focuses more on the relationship between Frankenstein and his assistant, played by James McAvoy and Daniel Radcliffe respectively.

In The Heart Of The Sea - This one comes out after Christmas, and just as well because it would probably ruin your day if you squeezed it in beforehand. Based on the real life shipwreck story of the Essex which inspired the tale of 'Moby Dick', it follows the plight of the crew as they are attacked by a whale and later forced to eat other to survive. Happy Christmas!

Krampus - So if you're forced to watch an actual Christmas movie this year, make it 'Krampus'. Based on the folkloric German monster, the antithesis to Father Christmas, it sees a family struggling to push through the day with the usual niceties, before they are all set upon by a children-hating demon who doesn't traditionally put presents under the tree.

Sisters - Starring the golden duo of comedy Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, this upcoming flick is almost a coming-of-age story in reverse. It sees two very different grown-up sisters returning to their childhood home to clear out their rooms and are inspired to return to the glory of their younger years by throwing a very messy house party before it has to be sold. For the nostalgic of audiences out there.

Grandma - No, it's not a story about a meek old lady who serves cookies and cake when you go to visit. This grandmother is the first person her pregnant teen granddaughter calls when she needs financial help. While she can't raise enough for her herself, she's definitely willing to kick the teen's ex-boyfriend's ass to get it for her. We all wish we had a grandma like that.
