Damien: Omen II Review

Very Good
Somewhat unfairly maligned as a hokey, schlocky series, The Omen has always been far more sinister series than its sequel-happy reputation would indicate. The movies are about the devil's son wreaking havoc on earth, for God's sake -- and not only is that about the most classically "evil" character you can get, he also tend to be unstoppable. Good never triumphs in these movies. But really, it can't... how would they keep making sequels?

No longer a toddler, Damien: Omen II finds our young antichrist shipped to Chicago to live with his aunt (Lee Grant) and uncle (William Holden -- yeah, that William Holden). He's a hugely successful titan of industry, which is perfect for Damien: Eventually he'll become the boss of Thorn Industries, a great vantage point for ruling the world as the dark lord.

Eye Of The Needle Review

Good
Regarded as a cult classic, this is actually a psycho thriller in the guise of a war drama. Donald Sutherland owns the film as a Nazi spy who's deeply infiltrated into British military intelligence during WWII. On a mission, he ends up shipwrecked on an island and shacking up with a wounded/retired/embittered British soldier and his hot stuff wife (Kate Nelligan), with whom he quickly develops a torrid affair. Eventually, though, this devolves into a standard cat and mouse game, as Nelligan figures out what's going on. The last half gets increasingly hokey to the point where you just watch for Sutherland to stare you down some more with his Nicholson-like gaze.

Conan The Destroyer Review

Bad
Might as well be Conan the Babysitter. This sad sequel (rated PG, no less), drops the gritty edge and wanton bloodlust of the original Conan the Barbarian in favor of a kid-friendly adventure that has him rescuing a princess (Olivia d'Abo in her screen debut), with Mako, Grace Jones, and Wilt Chamberlain all along for the ride. Schwarzenegger becomes a jibbering nitwit as well. Just awful. Even Red Sonja is better.

Theatre Of Blood Review

Good
This is about as close as Vincent Price got to playing Hamlet, in his campy and bizarre Theatre of Blood. Recalling Dr. Phibes, Price once again plays a man hell-bent on revenge, only this time it's an actor murdering his former critics. Unfortunately the killings aren't as wild in the Theatre -- even a drowning in a vat of wine looks an awful lot like someone splashing around in water. Come on Vincent, throw in some food coloring for us! And Vinnie with an afro... some things are too frightening for the movies.
