Skrillex has already picked up three Grammy Awards this evening and it remains to be seen whether he will still confound expectations by taking home the Best New Artist gong. In the pre-telecast section of the show, Skrillex was awarded Best Dance Recording and Best Dance / Electronica Album for 'Scary Monsters and nice Sprites', as well as Best Remixed Recording, Non-Classical for his remix of 'Cinema.'
Although Skrillex has made a name for himself in the dance world, for his Americanised version of dubstep, he is still considered an outsider for the Best New Artist category. He'll be up against The Band Perry, Bon Iver (who has already won Best Alternative Music Album tonight), J. Cole, and Nicki Minaj.
On the red carpet, Skrillex made a point of acknowledging 'Croydub', referring to the original dubstep scene, which is considered to have started out in the Croydon area of South London. Skrillex was sporting his trademark dark shades, whilst his Best New Artist competitor J Cole brought his mum along to the ceremony. After wining his award, Skrillex posted a message on his Twitter feed that read "f I can win grammys then that means all you yet to be seen bedroom geniuses will one day TAKEOVER THE WORLD." He later announced that the telephone number printed on the t-shirt worn by Deadmau5 on the red carpet was in fact his and commented ".gotta retire this phone."
