Review of Muscle Beach/The Al Gore Rhythm Single by The Siegfried Sassoon
Review of The Siegfried Sassoon's double a side single 'Muscle Beach/The Al Gore Rhythm' released through Natural History Records on 23rd March 2009.
Refreshingly different yet still managing to be eccentrically English, Surrey based The Siegfried Sassoon bring us their debut double a-side. Taking influence from Wire and XTC, they describe their sound as 'noisily alternative 8-bit post-pop'. The music is an erratic and chaotic mix of guitars, samples of retro Gameboy sounds and frantic vocals; and it's completely compelling!
Muscle Beach is three minutes of bizarre pop brilliance. Its Casio bleep intro, dirty guitar and crescendo like hook (the only real structure to the song) will be engrained on your mind after the first listen. The Al Gore Rhythm features Laura Mary Carter of Blood Red Shoes on vocals, and brings a softer melodic side to the constant wall of sound. Cleverly arranged sounds, classic song writing but completely unique; The Siegfried Sassoon are a breath of fresh air!
