Jim Kerr Feared Brother Was Caught In Paris Attacks

Simple Minds Jim Kerr

The band first heard of the atrocities unfolding in the French capital last Friday (13Nov15) when they switched on the TV news after a rehearsal for a concert in Brussels, Belgium the next day (14Nov15).

Kerr feared his brother Mark was in danger as he regularly works at the Bataclan theatre, where 89 gig-goers were slaughtered by terrorists during an Eagles of Death Metal show.

"We'd finished our production rehearsal in Brussels, came off stage and went back to our hotel feeling great," Kerr tells editors of British newspaper The Sun, "Then we switched on the TV and saw what had happened.

Belle & Sebastian Rocker Moved By Wife's Plea To Stage Charity Concert

The Scottish musician has revealed his wife Marisa was concerned about the crisis facing those who have fled to Europe from the war-torn Middle East, and she encouraged him to take action following the publication of pictures which showed a dead child on a beach in Turkey.

The Boy With The Arab Strap singer then spoke to the Save The Children charity about organising a concert to raise funds to help young refugees.

"When they found the body of the wee (small) boy that seemed to spark a compassion in people that had maybe been missing before that," Stuart tells Britain's Daily Record newspaper.

Jim Kerr: 'I Almost Quit Simple Minds'

Jim Kerr Simple Minds

The Don't You (Forget About Me) singer fronted the group during its 1980s heyday but their fortunes slumped the next decade following their departure from Virgin Records and the loss of several key members.

Their change in popularity meant they were performing in much smaller venues than previously, and Kerr has revealed the comedown from stadium-filling concerts to club gigs left him on the brink of quitting.

Kerr tells British magazine The New Review, "In the 1990s, when the wheels came off Simple Minds, we'd pass a stadium we had once filled - on our way to a club we had half-filled - and I came perilously close to quitting.

The Boy With The Arab Strap musicians are set to perform at the Clyde Auditorium in Glasgow, Scotland on 2 November (15) and all the profits from the concert will go to Save the Children's Child Refugee Crisis Appeal.

The Simple Minds stars will also perform at the show, along with fellow rockers Mogwai and comedian Josie Long.

"Belle And Sebastian, humbly, and with a good will, wish to stand behind the displaced peoples of Syria in their brave attempt to find a better life in Europe," the musicians tell Britain's Daily Record newspaper. "If governments won't help them, then the people must. Rock on."

Molly Ringwald Covers The Breakfast Club's 'Don't You (Forget About Me)

Molly Ringwald, of The Breakfast Club fame, has covered the film's main theme song for her new jazz album Except Sometimes. The singer puts a new spin on the catchy track, originally by Simple Minds.

"When I recorded the album...it was really soon after John Hughes passed away. And he was in my mind a lot," Ringwald told Vulture when asked why she decided to record the classic track. "And, I don't know, I felt like I wanted to sing a tribute to him. And also, I wanted to incorporate who I was into who I am." The Breakfast Club - directed by the late great John Hughes - and starring Ringwald, Emilio Estevez and Anthony Michael Hall followed five teenagers as they spend a Saturday detention together and come to realise they are all deeper than their respective stereotypes.
