Rockers Silverchair have made history after triumphing with five gongs at the 2007 Australian Recording Industry Association (Aria) Awards - making them the most successful ARIA winners of all time. The band was honoured with awards including Album of the Year (for their fifth disc, Young Modern), Song of the Year (Straight Lines), and Best Group on Sunday (28Oct07) at the Acer Arena ceremony in Sydney. The additional five accolades takes Silverchair's total ARIA winnings to 19 - beating pop star John Farnham by one to claim the title. And frontman Daniel Johns cannot believe their success. He says, "(We've more ARIAs than) Even John Farnham? Even Barnsey? Even Chisel? Even Midnight Oil? Even AC DC? "This is out of control. Can I hear a hallelujah?" Drummer Ben Gillies adds, "We don't think about how many ARIA awards we've won - honestly we have no idea." Meanwhile, Keith Urban won the award for Best Country Album (Love, Pain + The Whole Crazy Thing), dedicating the gong to his actress wife Nicole Kidman, and Sneaky Sound System picked up two of the six awards they were nominated for (Best Dance Album and Best Breakthrough Album). Other big winners on the night include Gotye (Best Male Artist), Missy Higgins (Best Female Artist), and newcomers Operator Please, who won the Breakthrough Single award for their track, Just a Song About Ping Pong.
