Sia's new music video for 'Elastic Heart' has been raising a few eyebrows.
Sia returns with another spectacularly choreographed video, once again starring pre-teen dance prodigy Maddie Ziegler who is this time joined by a topless Shia LaBeouf in a caged face-off for the epic single 'Elastic Heart'.
Shia LaBeouf goes primal in Sia's 'Elastic Heart' video
Having previously appeared in the erratic video for Sia's multi-platinum single 'Chandelier', 12-year-old Maddie Ziegler makes a return complete with the same wig and nude-coloured leotard for another bout of expressive movement in 'Elastic Heart'; the song from the soundtrack of 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire'. While her talent remains breathtaking in her latest venture, viewers were still quick to criticise the controversial content.
An artistic expression of Sia's, in her words, 'warring self-states', the video sees Ziegler and a topless 'Nymphomaniac' star Shia LaBeouf locked in a cage, the former raging and the latter looking fearful. Ziegler attempts to launch an assault on LaBeouf in a lion-like manner as he dodges her advances and backs away. There's a playful element to it as the pair pull funny faces at each other and dance together, plus an impressive moment where LaBeouf climbs to the top of the cage before dropping next to the tiring dancer. When she easily manages to slip between the cage bars, LaBeouf is seen desperately trying to get at her, unable to get out himself. While the premise seems innocent enough, on the face of it no different from a father and daughter playing together, viewers have reacted shockingly and described it as 'disgusting' and 'weird'.
Sia addressed to criticism in a series of Tweets. 'I anticipated some 'pedophelia!!!' Cries for this video', she explains. 'All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play these two warring 'sia' self states. I apologize to those who feel triggered by #ElasticHeart My intention was to create some emotional content, not to upset anybody.'
We agree with Sia on the concept and certainly have to praise both Ziegler and dance novice LaBeouf on their gripping performances. It marks another unusual project for LaBeouf, who's recently been experimenting with artistic expression, most notably in the form of his #IAMSORRY exhibition in a Los Angeles gallery which saw him greet visitors (or rather, not) wearing a brown paper bag on his head.
'Elastic Heart' features The Weeknd and Diplo and was co-produced by the latter. While it appeared on 'The Hunger Games' soundtrack in 2013, it was also released on her number one album '1000 Forms of Fear'.
