New York, I Love You Review

Very Good
There are 11 captivating short films in this anthology, the second in the Cities of Love series by producers Benbihy and Grasic. But this collection isn't quite as varied or engaging as Paris Je T'Aime.

All of these stories take place in Manhattan, with only one or two brief forays into other boroughs, and they all centre around relatively well-off people, mainly white or Asian. They're also quite serious and emotional, with only brief moments of humour dotted here and there, although some make us smile more than others. Each is about a male-female relationship--marriages, brief encounters, possibilities, life-long companionship. Most have a somewhat gimmicky twist, and a few are intriguingly oblique.

All About Lily Chou-Chou Review

Excellent
The inexplicable adolescent roller coaster we all go through is often difficult to articulate on screen without including the dull, stereotypical norms of peer pressure to smoke, drink, and have sex. But writer/director Shunji Iwai finds a more unique youthful voice for his new feature All About Lily Chou-Chou. The 2 1/2 hour journey is based on the path of Yuichi (Hayato Ichihara) and takes place over the course of several years. Being average and shy, he is the frequent object of bullying. He lives with his pregnant mother, her boyfriend, and the boyfriend's son. As both adults work to support the family, Yuichi is left to his own devices often, as are most of his peers, which can be dangerous during an age when you are usually trying to get away with as much as possible.
