The SPIDER-MAN sequel is set to smash Shrek 2's two-month old box office record when official Independence Day weekend figures are released later today (05JUL04).

Estimates yesterday (04JUL04) put the gross for SPIDER-MAN 2 in the $150 million (GBP83.3 million) region since the film opened on Wednesday (30JUN04), which would shatter the record for the best Wednesday-Sunday opening which was set in May (04) by Shrek 2.

But the film seems to have failed to better the weekend opening of the first record-breaking Spider-Man in 2002 - estimates suggest the film has raked in $90 million (GBP50 million) over the three-day period.

The original film took in a staggering $114.8 million (GBP63.7 million) in three days two years ago.

Spider-Man 2 is also poised to beat the previous high for best first six days, held by The Matrix Reloaded at $146.9 million (GBP81.6 million).

Last Wednesday, Spider-Man 2 took in $40.5 million (GBP22.5 million), a record single-day debut.

Meanwhile, it was also another good weekend for Michael Moore's FAHRENHEIT 9/11, which took in another estimated $17 million (GBP9.4 million), pushing it's two weekend total to $56.1 million (GBP29.5 million). The film is on course to become the first documentary to top the $100 million (GBP55.5 million) mark.
