Downton Abbey's U.S Contingent Swells Following Paul Giamatti Addition

Paul Giamatti Shirley Maclaine

Keeping one eye firmly on the U.S market, where the show is arguably more of a hit than in the U.K (where it is still appreciated, but not with as much fandom), Downton Abbey's producers have made a shrewd move by getting Sideways star Paul Giamatti on board to play the “maverick” brother of Cora, Countess of Grantham.

Gareth Neame, managing director of Carnival Films which makes the programme, said, “We're excited that Paul Giamatti will be joining us on Downton to play Cora's brother Harold, the rather free-spirited uncle to Mary and Edith. We can't wait to see him work alongside Shirley Maclaine, who are both sure to upset the Grantham's apple cart in this year's Christmas Day episode.”

The death of Dan Stevens's Matthew Crawley, who was heir to the Grantham estate, shocked the viewing public. He died in a car accident after visiting his wife and their firstborn in hospital. Sorry, spoilers. But you’re not reading this unless you’ve seen the lot, are you? Downton has been an unprecedented success; it is the highest-rating drama in US broadcaster PBS's 40-year history and has won multiple Emmy and Golden Globe awards.

Downton Abbey Season 3 In America - Review Roundup

Shirley Maclaine

Downton Abbey quickly became one of the most popular shows in the UK. Costume dramas have always been a treat for British audiences, but they were usually limited to adaptions of literary classics, or two to three part specials to mark the festive period. With Downton, the elegance of the period drama was thrust into TV screens on a weekly basis.

It's not just the Brits that love it, though. Winning a Guinness World Record in 2011 for "Highest critical review ratings for a TV show", made Downton Abbey the most critically well-received TV show in the world.

Season 3 premieres in America this Sunday, Jan 6, so here's a chance to take a look at some reviews before we reacquaint ourselves with the folks of Downton.

Downton Abbey Season Three: Move Over Maggie, Shirley's Back In Town

Shirley Maclaine Maggie Smith

Season three of Downton Abbey premieres on PBS this Sunday (January 6, 2013), with the arrival of silver-screen icon Shirley Maclaine. The Oscar and Golden Globe winning actress plays Martha Levinson in the best-loved period drama, and is set to go head-to-head with the stoic Countess of Grantham, played by Maggie Smith.

MacLaine - perhaps best known for The Apartment and Terms of Endearment - explained to the New York Times how she prepared to act alongside Smith. "I thought the best course of action in going toe-to-toe with Maggie would be a sense of American expressive feeling," she explained. In one upcoming scene, MacLaine's character serenades Smith, "I told her I was going to sing it, and first she said to me, [genteel Maggie Smith voice] 'You know, dear, when you do that, I'm going to fall off the chair.' I said, 'OK.' And then she said, 'No, I think not. I think I'll fall asleep.' I said, 'OK, that's good, too.' And then she said, 'No, I think I will cry.' I said, I don't know what you'd do that for, but whatever. What she did instead was flirt back. [Laughs] I was so surprised."

Legendary actress MacLaine was married to businessman Steve Parker until 1982, though revealed to Oprah Winfrey in 2011 that she had an open relationship with her husband. Smith has been married on two occasions, to actor Robert Stephens and playwright Beverly Cross, and she and MacLaine compared notes on past lovers on the Downton Set. "We sat and we reminisced about life and lovers and the business and directors," said MacLaine, adding, "That was really interesting and so much fun. When we were doing a press conference here, someone asked me if I had known Maggie before. And I said, 'Oh, yes, we were lovers in another life.' [Laughs] I don't know where that came from."

Season 3 Of Downton Abbey Due In USA – But Has Twitter Spoiled It?

Maggie Smith Michelle Obama Shirley Maclaine

Season 3 of Downton Abbey is about to hit PBS in the USA on Sunday and so far, Michelle Obama has managed to keep her sneak-peek at the new series under her hat but the footnote at the bottom of Hitfix.com’s review suggests that social media sites have probably provided quite a few spoilers for US audiences. Unless America’s citizens have been living a net-free life since the series aired in the UK, it’s inevitable that they’ll have stumbled upon some of the storylines. The disgruntled Hitfix blogger Alan Sepinwall writes that “Twitter has already spoiled plenty for the non-torrenting American audience; let's leave it at that,” imploring the site’s users not to add to the gossip.

That said, Sepinwall is hardly a fan of the show, concluding that he needs to “simply accept” that, after three seasons of writing about it, it simply isn’t the show for him. It’s not all bad news for Downton, as season three is considered to be an improvement on the previous two series.

The highlight for many Americans, of course, will be the presence of Shirley Maclaine, who appears in the role of Martha Levinson, the American mother of Lady Cora (played by Elizabeth McGovern). the time that she shares onscreen with Maggie Smith, particularly, provides some of the highlights of the series.

‘Steel Magnolias’ Producer Sues Lifetime Over Queen Latifah Remake

Queen Latifah Phylicia Rashad Shirley Maclaine Julia Roberts Dolly Parton

Victoria L. White, the producer who worked on the tearjerker movie ‘Steel Magnolias’, is suing Lifetime over a television remake, claiming she isn’t getting the cash – or credit - that she deserves, reports TMZ.com.

White, an executive producer of the 1989 film starring Julia Roberts, Dolly Parton and Shirley Maclaine, filed a suit against Sony Pictures and Lifetime Television over a new television film starring Queen Latifah and Phylicia Rashad. The legal documents show that White claims to have a “television agreement” that entitles her to a co-producer of co-executive producer credit on any television project based on the film, as well as a $15,000 fee and 3.75% of profits. She alleges that Sony is fully aware of her television deal, mainly because the studio has already adhered to the terms once before. White was listed as a co-producer for the 1992 CBS television movie based ‘Steel Magnolias’. Why Sony and Lifetime have chosen to ignore the contract this time around is unclear.

Though the producer is suing for competition, she also wants an injunction to stop the movie from airing altogether, which seems a little dramatic. The film is set to air on October 7 – i.e. in four days – so we’re going to go out on a limb and say it’s still going to air, anyway.

Valentine's Day Review

Good
With an enormous ensemble cast and more intertwined plots than you can count, this fluffy concoction is shamelessly sentimental and silly, and yet it's also an undemanding crowd-pleaser.

Valentine's Day in Los Angeles brings a series of romantic crises. A flower seller (Kutcher) has proposed to his less-than-keen girlfriend (Alba), then discovers his best friend's (Garner) boyfriend (Dempsey) is married. A phone-sex operator (Hathaway) is afraid to tell her boyfriend (Grace) what she does for a living. An romance-hating publicist (Biel) is helping her client (Dane) manage a media storm. A group of teens (Swift, Lautner, Roberts and Jenkins) are grappling with chastity. And two strangers (Roberts and Cooper) strike up a conversation on a trans-Atlantic flight.

Carolina Review

OK
Just by looking at the cover you'll be able to figure out a fair amount of the content of Carolina. Sure, there will be a love triangle forming its central struggle, and a kindly old grandmother (Shirley MacLaine) will be on hand to dispense wisdom to young Carolina (Julia Stiles).

But will you guess that a major subplot will blatantly (and explicitly) rip off The Rocking Horse Winner? Or that MacLaine will spew a monologue about rubbing manure on her breasts? Wow. How could you?

Being There Review

Extraordinary
If we're to believe 2004's The Life and Death of Peter Sellers, the Briton who seemingly defined the term "comic actor" was an angry shell of a man, a vacant vessel who stumbled his way through life. Given that, could there be a more brilliant or appropriate final hurrah for Sellers than Being There?

In his final big role before his death, Sellers brings to life a man called Chance, a feeble-minded and quiet middle-aged gardener in a Washington, D.C. mansion he's never left. Chance's life - which consists of tending to the small garden, taking meals prepared by another servant, and watching and mimicking television - is shattered when the patron of the manse passes away and the house is sold, forcing Chance out into the harsh world he's never experienced.

Bewitched Review

Bad
Heed my advice before seeing Bewitched: It may fly like a witch and twitch like a witch, but it's certainly not the beloved Bewitched.

While its trailers make you believe the small screen gem has been reincarnated from its TV Land graveyard, those expecting a proper big screen revival will be sorely disappointed. In fact, the sisters Ephron have carefully crafted a film that tries and succeeds at not resembling the original. Too bad the parts they took out are all the best bits. The finished product is new and different, but it's too predictable and remarkably devoid of anything entertaining or enduring.
