Indecent Proposal Review

Weak
There are great erotic film experiences and wrenching emotional film experiences. Indecent Proposal tries awkwardly to be both and ends up as neither. Perhaps, with a premise so salaciously bent on hidden desires, the filmmakers thought a maudlin tale of deep love would be the perfect counterbalance. Instead, the film is an uneasy mixture of overwrought soap opera and softcore eroticism. The soap opera outweighs the eroticism and drowns the movie, but even the awkwardly placed sex scenes are so heavy-handed they can't keep things afloat. Here is a movie simultaneously preoccupied with getting viewers hot and bothered and manipulating them into ambivalent emotional turmoil. The combination is not very arousing.

The zesty, scandalous plot device at the center of the film and the sole reason the movie became a fairly big hit in 1993 can be summed up in one line: "Suppose... I were to offer you one million dollars for one night with your wife." And yes, that surface exposition is intriguing in its glossy, high-concept way. But in truth, the appeal of that tantalizing conundrum gets lost in a muddle of a screenplay that really is not about that spicy million-dollar offer, but rather a tepid, long-winded story of a relationship tested by temptation. In theory, the material could work. In practice, Indecent Proposal is a bland, melodramatic sit.

Black Rain Review

Good
Let's ponder these ingredients: Ridley Scott, Michael Douglas, sunglasses, motorcycles, Osaka, and nighttime. Sounds like a recipe for Black Rain indeed.

Douglas is a mildly corrupt cop (he's on the take, sure, but he also races motorcycles to earn a few bucks before work), but we are expected to forgive this because he has to pay alimony and child support (though the wife seems to be far better off). While internal affairs closes in, our pal Nick gets involved in a Yakuza gang war -- as he and partner Charlie (Andy Garcia) are having lunch, no less.

Fatal Attraction Review

Excellent
Finally released on DVD, Fatal Attraction proves itself just as deliciously thrilling as when it was first released in 1987.

Glenn Close's career got its first big boost in 1985's Jagged Edge, but her role as Fatal's Alex Forrest pushed her into stardom. She seems like a nice enough gal at the start -- though her hair could use some work, she's a witty and sexy book editor... just the right kind of gal to lure Michael Douglas's Dan Gallagher (a lawyer... married) into her bed. But Dan's crisis of conscience sends him scurrying home to his family in short order, only for Alex to start obsessing over their "relationship."

The Accused Review

Very Good
If Jodie Foster wasn't the star of The Accused, chances are few would have seen it and no one would remember it today. But Foster's portrayal of Sarah Tobias is gritty, down-and-dirty -- a younger Silkwood of sorts. She won the Oscar, and launched her career as a serious actress.

But the rest of the film is forgettable, despite its heavy-at-the-time thematics. The plot revolves around Sarah's gang rape in a roadside bar and the lawsuit that results -- considerably complicated because Sarah was drunk, stoned, flirting, dressed provocatively, and, to be honest, is a bit of a slut.
