Sherri Shepherd is involved in a custody battle with her first husband, comedian Jeffrey Tarpley. Tarpley has claimed she is a neglectful mother in documents filed in April.
Sherri Shepherd, the actress and host best known for her appearances on talk show The View, has been accused of being a neglectful mother. Her ex-husband, Jeffrey Tarpley, has made the accusations and is hoping to gain full custody of their child.
Sherri Shepherd's ex-husband is suing for custody of their 9-year-old son.
Tarpley lives thousands of miles away from his son in New Jersey, whilst his ex-wife and son reside in Los Angeles. Whilst he still apparently sees his son, also called Jeffrey, his visits are short and he believes he needs full custody of Jeffrey in order to care properly for him.
Tarpley has claimed his 9-year-old son has special needs. He also called Jeffrey Jr. is barely literate and reads at a level two years below others of his age. Their son allegedly writes like an average 2nd grader, children who are aged 7-8. Tarpley’s allegations have been revealed following his emergency request filed in April, according to TMZ. The comedian wants full physical custody of their son and has cited Shepherd’s busy schedule as one of the reasons why she is allegedly neglectful. The 47-year-old actress certainly has a busy schedule as she hosts The View and The Newlywed Game in addition her other acting commitments.

The allegations stated in the emergency request also implied Shepherd was leaving Jeffrey Jr. with inappropriate guardians who are effectively “unskilled nannies”. Tarpley believes this is one of the reasons is son is struggling at school. He also claimed his son was failing to learn basic hygiene and life skills such as tying his shoes laces. Tarpley stated he believed his son was having to use Velcro as he was unable to tie his own laces and as a result was suffering from low self-esteem. On the hygiene front, Shepherd allegedly isn’t teaching her son about the very basics of how to care for himself.
Shepherd isn’t simply letting Tarpley have the last word as she too has filed documentation in response claiming her ex-husband is an absentee father. We’ll have to wait until July to hear the outcome as a judge initially denied Tarpley request, but a hearing has been set to air grievances from both parties. Shepherd is currently undergoing other legal issue as her current husband, writer Lamar Sally, is filing for divorce. The couple married in 2011, two years after Shepherd divorced Tarpley.
