'Big Little Lies': The Critics Consensus Has Been Less Than Positive

Reese Witherspoon Nicole Kidman Shailene Woodley

It's not everyday you see top Hollywood stars the likes of Reese Witherspoon, Shailene Woodley and Nicole Kidman band together for a TV drama, but that's what made the prospect of HBO's 'Big Little Lies' all the more exciting. Unfortunately, the story itself has on the whole proved rather mediocre.

Reese WitherspoonReese Witherspoon stars in 'Big Little Lies'

Based on the 2014 best-selling Liane Moriarty novel of the same name, this 7-episode mini-series seems to be something of a disappointment to the general consensus of critics. It's about a trio of Californian housewives whose children all go to the same elementary school, with their personal lives intertwining and culminating in disaster.

Snowden Review

Excellent

Here's another remarkable biopic from Oliver Stone, who has used all-star casts and intensely pointed filmmaking to trace the lives of such people as JFK, Nixon, Jim Morrison and George W. Bush. And now he turns his attention to whistleblower Edward Snowden. This is an urgent, skilfully made film that manages to avoid preachy politics as it asks the central question: was Snowden a traitor or a patriot?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Ed, a nerdy genius who never went to university but was spotted by CIA trainer Corbin (Rhys Ifans) and brought into the fold. Rising through the ranks, he moves from Virginia to Switzerland, Japan and Hawaii, accompanied by his long-suffering girlfriend Lindsay (Shailene Woodley), who isn't allowed to know what he does for a living. Over the years, his faith in America's government is shaken as he discovers the scale of its data-gathering operation, collecting all telephone and internet information on every person on earth, whether or not they're a suspect. And he believes that the taxpayers have a right to know what their elected officials are doing.

The script tells the story as Ed describes his life to filmmaker Laura Poitras (Melissa Leo) and two Guardian journalists (Zachary Quinto and Tom Wilkinson) while hiding in a Hong Kong hotel, an event recounted in the Oscar-winning documentary Citizenfour. Eventually, this element of the story generates some proper action as the CIA tracks him down and gives chase. Stone orchestrates these scenes expertly, generating some real adrenaline without sacrificing the bigger narrative. And Gordon-Levitt is simply remarkable, vanishing into the role so effectively that the final dissolve to the real Snowden is barely perceptible. His chemistry with Woodley is complex and engaging (even with a gratuitous sex scene), creating a terrific central love story to guide the audience through the events.

Shailene Woodley was arrested on Monday (October 10th 2016) after becoming involved in a peaceful protest against the Dakota Access pipeline at Standing Rock in North/South Dakota. After the US Court of Appeals chose to deny an injunction to halt construction of the Dakota Access pipeline, Woodley took to the frontline to continue the long-standing peaceful protest yesterday. However, soon riot police arrived on the scene to break up the demonstration, and because she was among those identified at the scene, she wound up being arrested for criminal trespassing. Shailene Woodley Says 'Divergent' TV Series Is Not What She Signed Up For

Shailene Woodley Miles Teller

Actress Shailene Woodley doesn't seem too keen on the idea of moving the Divergent series to television for its final instalment, Ascendant. While no final plans have been announced, it has been reported that the series is set to end on the small screen, after the disappointing box office performance of the latest movie.

Shailene WoodleyShailene Woodley may not take part in a Divergent TV series

Speaking about the proposed television series to E! News, Woodley said: "From what I know, they want to proceed with a television show, which is not something that I signed up to do. Out of respect to the whole scenario, there could be things that have changed, but I didn't sign up to do a TV show.”

Snowden Trailer

Edward Snowden always knew he wanted to serve his country and, as most young men and women who feel the need to serve their country, he enrolled in the United States Army Reserves, training was tough and it took a toll on his body, an accident led to Snowden fracturing both his legs, his plans for the future were thrown into chaos and he had to evaluate a new way to serve - as well as make a living.

Turing to one of his other natural skills, Snowden continued to hone his computer skills and finally applied for a job at the CIA. Working his way up the ranks, Snowden became an intrinsic member of staff and it lead him to be offered a new job at the NSA by their deputy director. His job was to analyse the internet, to find new ways to intercept the one communication from the 'bad guy' amongst all the innocent communications each person sends on a day to day basis but what he discovers is that the NSA have access to far more knowledge and information than he or any other normal citizen would expect.

Though he's never believed in sharing state secrets, now he's privy to this information, Snowden knows he must do something with it and that he might be putting his life on the line in order to bring this enormous data privacy breach to light. Sneaking out files via a micro drive hidden in his rubik's cube, Snowden contacts three journalists Laura Poitras, Ewen MacAskill and Glenn Greenwald with his newly found knowledge and they begin to unfold the information.

Divergent Signals A New Future For Teen Franchises

Shailene Woodley

In recent years, Twilight and The Hunger Games have led a surge of young adult movie franchises. Many challengers (such as Mortal Instruments) never made it past the first film, while those that did (like The Maze Runner) have struggled to maintain audiences. And now comes word that the studio Lionsgate is planning to make the third film in the Divergent series for TV, followed by a spin-off series.

AllegiantAllegiant is the third installment of the Divergent series

While Divergent and its first sequel Insurgent were big hits, the third film Allegiant stumbled at the box office last year. The fourth and final chapter Ascendant was slated to open in June 2017 against Tom Cruise's remake of The Mummy and Brad Pitt's World War Z sequel. But word has it that Lionsgate has changed their plan.

Is The 'Divergent Series' Set To End With A TV Movie?

Shailene Woodley Theo James Ansel Elgort

The fourth and final film in the Divergent franchise might never be coming to a theatre near you. The film was initially scheduled for a June 2017 release, but now studio Lionsgate is said to be considering wrapping up the series with a television movie and a spinoff series instead.

Divergent Series AllegiantWill the final Divergent movie now be on the small screen?

Variety reports that negotiations are currently in the early stages, but 'an individual with knowledge of the situation' has said that instead of having The Divergent Series: Ascendant open in theatres next year as originally planned, the studio wants to wrap up the film series on television.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant Review

OK

After the more thrilling Insurgent, this saga reverts to the talky style of the original Divergent movie, constantly explaining this post-apocalyptic world's convoluted mythology before indulging in whizzy action that has little to do with the story or characters. It's a strange step back for a franchise that has such a strong cast and high production values. And this movie also feels frustratingly incomplete, because it's only based on the first half of Veronica Roth's third and final novel (a fourth film, Ascendant, is due next year).

When we last saw our hero Tris (Shailene Woodley), she and her hunky boyfriend Four (Theo James) had overthrown the nasty Erudite leaders to create a "factionless" society in Chicago under new leader Evelyn (Naomi Watts), Four's mother. But Evelyn's willingness to indulge in military excesses causes a rift with the more peace-loving leader Johanna (Octavia Spencer), sparking a civil war. Bored with this, Tris and Four free Tris' brother Caleb (Ansel Elgort) from death row and escape over the walls out of Chicago along with cohorts Peter and Christina (Miles Teller and Zoe Kravitz). Fleeing into the fringe, they encounter a peaceful, futuristic community called the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, run by David (Jeff Daniels). There they learn new facts about their past, but they're unable to ignore the unravelling situation in Chicago.

As in the first film, this script is over-packed with long conversations about the society's complicated set-up, and the Bureau has its own set of issues. Some of this information provides welcome context to the earlier films, but the screenwriters also hold back a lot of key details for next time, so this episode is oddly inconclusive. And that also makes it feel dull and contrived, especially since it leaves the characters' motivations so badly muddled. There's also the problem that these movies continually steal ideas and imagery from other films (this time it's Mad Max and The Truman Show).

Shailene Woodley Likes The Depth Of Allegiant

Shailene Woodley

Especially as the movie expands on the post-apocalyptic world by sending Tris, her boyfriend Four (Theo James) and their friends beyond Chicago to the futuristic home of the Bureau of Genetic Welfare, run by the mysterious David (Jeff Daniels).

The cast of Divergent will reunite for the fourth film too

"It's a completely different organism," Woodley says of the Bureau. "It has its own political leaders. It's a full-blown running society. And I think when Tris and Four enter they're a little hesitant of it and also very keen on the luxuries that come with a world that's not war-torn. It's functioning and has access to things that they didn't have in Chicago."

'Insurgent' Spends More Time On Shailene Woodley And Characterisation

Shailene Woodley Kate Winslet Naomi Watts Octavia Spencer Ashley Judd

Unless you had read the book, last year's hit 'Divergent' probably left you scratching your head about the story set in post-war Chicago, where people are segmented into factions according to their personalities (Dauntless, Candor, Amity, Erudite and Abnegation), plus the factionless rebels and multi-factioned divergents. Basically it all felt rather contrived, and director Neil Burger's movie had to spend too much time trying to explain how it worked.

Now we move into the second chapter, 'Insurgent', and director Robert Schwentke can just get on with the story, playing down the odd structure of this closed-off city. So it's a much more involving movie that centres on the characters themselves, weaving the action into their personal situations while building a much more urgent sense of suspense up to another cliff-hanger ending. This also lets the female-dominated cast members shine, including Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet and Naomi Watts, plus Octavia Spencer in a key cameo, and Ashley Judd in recurring flashbacks.

'The Fault In Our Stars' Bench In Amsterdam Disappears, Fans Left Confused

Shailene Woodley Ansel Elgort

The Amsterdam bench that was used in The Fault in Our Stars has mysteriously gone missing. Even representatives from the Dutch city aren't quite sure where the wooden seat upon which Shailene Woodley's Hazel and Ansel Elgort's Augustus sit and share an intimate moment has disappeared to.

Due to the movie's success, fans have already created their own maps of the city pinpointing key locations from filming but will have to cut their tours short now that the the green bench that used to sit on the Leidsdegracht has gone.

"It's a bit embarrassing, because we do keep good track of them, but it's gone all right," said city spokesman Stephan van der Hoek, via THR. He said that film fans visiting the city had begun to ask where the bench was.

'The Fault In Our Stars' Reaches Out To Its Fans

Shailene Woodley

Adapting a much-beloved novel to the big screen is tricky business, but it always helps if the book's fanbase is made up of teen girls. They're the most loyal fans on earth, able to turn the mopiest material into a global hit (see also the Twilight saga). The Fault in Our Stars started as a 2012 novel by John Green, and its tale of 16-year-old cancer patient Hazel touched a nerve with readers and critics alike for its earthy authenticity.

An international bestseller, it didn't take long to plan a film version led by Oscar-nominee Shailene Woodley and Alsel Elgort, who also appear together in Divergent, based on another young-adult bestseller. Unlike the one-off The Fault in Our Stars, Divergent is the first in a series of books, so is being turned into a movie franchise, with the sequel Insurgent now in production.

This week A Fault in Our Star actress Shailene Woodley disguised herself in a long curly wig so she could enjoy her new movie at a regular cinema incognito. It may seem like a very simple disguise but it worked and Shailene was able to enjoy the film without causing a scene. Of course sometimes for a celebrity a disguise is necessary, especially when you're looking to carry out normal, everyday activities. Here’s five other examples of stars who have tried (and mostly failed) at going incognito. Come on, would you have recognised them?

The pair's relationship is all the more miraculous given that they met and fell in love at a cancer support group. Based upon the bestselling novel by John Green, the movie has been steadily garnering acclaim for the best part of a year now and it finally gets its full release this weekend.

The cast of Divergent sequels Insurgent and Allegiant is already taking shape with Naomi Watts being the latest A-lister to join the lineup. The actress joins Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Zoe Kravitz and a number of other celebrities for the remaining movies of the young adult franchise. Shailene Woodley is quite the anomaly in the world of showbiz: not because her image isn't crafted but because she at least claims not to buy into the 'more, more, more' mentality of materialism like many of her peers. Whatever Happened To Shailene Woodley's Scenes In "The Amazing Spider-Man 2?"

Shailene Woodley Andrew Garfield Emma Stone

Have you seen The Amazing Spider-Man 2? Noticed something missing from The Amazing Spider-Man 2? People on the internet have – Mary Jane Watson did not feature in a single scene, despite the fact that there was an actress, cast for the role. Shailene Woodley, the rising young actress with lead roles in Divergent and The Fault in Our Stars even shot her scenes as MJ, but by the time the film was released, they had ended up on the cutting room floor. Or, more likely, at the bottom of some tired film editor’s hard drive.

Shailene Woodley
Woodley did "a couple days of great work" on the film, but her scenes just didn't fit in with the story.

Besides a few pap shots of Woodley with long red hair, it seems like her turn as MJ is lost forever. But why? According to director Marc Webb and producer Matt Tolmach, speaking for The LA Times, it had nothing to do with her performance – in fact, Woodley did a great job. The decision to cut her scenes was just made to devote more screen time to the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen Stacy.

Lionsgate Fancy Three More Divergent Films: 'Allegiant' To Be Two Movies

Shailene Woodley

Lionsgate have ignored the fact that critics pretty much hated the first film in the trilogy adapted from Veronica Roth book, and have announced that the third film – Allegiant – will be split into two films a la Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows and Hunger Games: Mockingjay. The third and final book in the Divergent series, Allegiant, is to be split into two films, Lionsgate/Summit have decided. Shailene Woodley stars as Tris Prior, the young heroine in Roth's novels, and will be expected to reprise her critically praised role in each of the films in the planned quadrilogy. The film as a whole didn't fare particularly well at the hands of critics however, so it will be interesting to see whether Neil Burger remains attached to the projects.

Since the Harry Potter and Twilight series ended in 2011 and 2012, respectively, studios are on the lookout for the next blockbuster movie franchise. And since it worked for those sagas, they have been turning to popular book series. This month's entry is Divergent, based on the first of Veronica Roth's three novels set in a dystopian future. It's done well at the US box office, but this week's expansion around the world will be the real sign of whether the franchise has legs.

Gwyneth Paltrow & Chris Martin Split: Actress Gwyneth Paltrow and her husband, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin announced this week that they were splitting up. Well, instead they described their split as a "conscious uncoupling," a phrase that drew scorn and mockery from the internet. The pair had reportedly been testing their separation for a year and finally decided to go public. In an entry on the Iron Man star's website, the couple explained that being parents to their two children was the priority for them right now.

L'Wren Scott's Will: The last will and testament of the late fashion designer L'Wren Scott has been made public. The former model was found hanged in her Manhattan apartment on Monday 17th March whilst her boyfriend, Mick Jagger, was on tour with the Rolling Stones. Jagger is the only named beneficiary in L'Wren's will, with her adoptive siblings explicitly denied any of her $9 million estate. Scott's sister, Jan Shane, has lashed out at the Jagger's for turning the designer's death into a "media circus" - read about what else she had to say.

Divergent has emerged as the weekend's top movie at the box office after sweeping in $56 million, according to estimates from Box Office Mojo. Adapted from Veronica Roth's best-selling YA fiction series, the dystopian sci-fi film follows life through the eyes of a rather special teenager, Tris (played by Shailene Woodley), and has struck a chord with a huge movie audience.

'Divergent' Has Attracted A Monster Audience In Its First Weekend.

There wasn't even a close contender to the Neil Burger-directed blockbuster, which also stars Kate Winslet, Theo James and Maggie Q. The Muppets Most Wanted debuted in a far second with $16.5 million, knocking the shine from the eagerly-anticipated new Kermit and Miss Piggy instalment. Last week's number one, the tremendously successful Mr. Peabody & Sherman cartoon, was handed a nonetheless respectable third place, having earned $11.7 million.

Despite Awful Reviews, Veronica Roth Is Pleased With Divergent Adaptation

Shailene Woodley

The movie version of Veronica Roth’s book Divergant hit cinemas yesterday after a less than favourable reaction from the critics. But despite the reviews, Roth says she’s pleased with the movie adaptation of her popular novel, which – it has recently been announce – will get a sequel.

DivergentThe cast of Divergent discuss the bad reviews

“My anxieties were just the standard anxieties of any author who hands over their work to be adapted. But, I know from the second the book hits the shelf, it stops belonging to the person who wrote it. It starts belonging to everyone who reads it. So I was pretty well practiced in letting it go a little bit, which is a good thing,” Roth said.

'Divergent' Reviews Suggest A Stinker, And We've Got 2 Sequels To Come...

Shailene Woodley Kate Winslet

While aiming to reach the heights of Hunger Games - a young female protagonist fights against the system in a dystopian nightmare – ‘Divergent’ missed its mark, and the critics have had no mercy when illustrating the degree to which it’s done so.

DivergentTris Prior gets checked out in Divergent... turns out, she's a divergent

The film sees Tris Prior - played by Shailene Woodley – fail to slot neatly into any of the devised factions, designed keep people in place in a dystopian Chicago. Because of this, she’s considered a ‘divergent’ and has to go into hiding, at which point she realises a conspiracy is afoot, headed by Jeanine Matthews (Kate Winslet), to KILL DIVERGANTS.

Divergent Fails To Impress Critics - Good Acting, Bad Action [Video + Pictures]

Shailene Woodley Theo James

Divergent – the YA dystopian adaptation of the year, had expectations soaring before its release. Not only is it based on a much beloved book with a devoted fanbase, it also has a stellar cast and strong story going for it. Divergent is set in a future society, where, after some manmade disaster has wiped out large chunks of the population, people now separate themselves into factions, based on their dominant virtues. There’s Candor for the honest, Dauntless for the brave, Abnegation for the selfless, Amity for the peaceful (you’d think those two could unite their causes). 16-year-old Tris finds out she’s Divergent, meaning she belongs in more than one faction and makes a choice, which will change her life forever.

Shailene Woodley, Divergent Still
Shailene Woodley is great, but can't save the movie.

The premise certainly sounds exciting enough, and right on point with the zeitgeist. Add to that the names of this year’s It-girl Shailene Woodley and the as-of-yet relatively unknown, but very, very attractive Theo James (what else could we ask for in a teen movie love interest?) and it sounds like a recipe for success. Early reviews, however, have not been all that great. Divergent premiered on Tuesday (US wide release is set for Friday) and it’s already getting bad press. A 22% rating on Rotten Tomatoes is definitely a bad omen.

Shailene Woodley Becomes Hollywood's Newest Heroin In 'Divergent'

Shailene Woodley

Is 'The Maze Runner' The Next Big Young-Adult Movie?

Kaya Scodelario Dylan O'Brien Shailene Woodley

Just as everyone was beginning to get really hyped up for Shailene Woodley's upcoming flick Divergent it looks like another movie may be just about to steal its thunder. You've got to act fast in this business (or you'll get hunted down, if these movies are anything to go by!).  Based on the series by James Dashner, The Maze Runner certainly looks like it will be worthy of joining the list of big box office movies based on young adult books.  Over the past few years movies aimed at a young adult audience, such as the Harry Potter series, Twilight franchise, The Hunger Games and currently Dviergent, have been vastly popular, drawing in huge audiences of young adults and adults alike.  They've definitely become a guilty pleasure, whether you're 15 or 50 years old.

The Maze Runner
Teen Wolf's Dylan O'Brien will star in The Maze Runner

Starring Teen Wolf’s Dylan O’Brien, The Maze Runner seems to be a solid contender to challenge The Hunger Games and Divergent in action and story, although unlike the other two movies, this one has a male lead. We think we’ll allow a boy to take control for once, there has been a lot of girl power in movies lately, we feel like we've had our fix!  Although no one could rival The Hunger Games' Katniss Everdeen in our eyes.

'Divergent' Actress Shailene Woodley Slams "Toxic" 'Twilight': Is She Right?

Shailene Woodley

Divergent star Shailene Woodley has slammed the Twilight franchise, particularly the “toxic” relationship between the lead characters. Woodley told Teen Vogue magazine, “‘Twilight,’ I’m sorry, is about a very unhealthy toxic relationship. She falls in love with this guy and the second he leaves her, her life is over and she’s going to kill herself! What message are we sending to young people? That is not going to help this world evolve.”  Wise words from such a young actress!

shailene woodley The Divergent actress has labeled Twilight "toxic" and "unhealthy"

We’ve got to admit, 22 year old Shailene has said what’s been playing on our minds for a long time now! The Bella-Edward relationship is all very romantic if you don’t mind a suffocatingly intense relationship with a man who thinks it’s OK to watch you without your knowledge while you sleep. Edward’s express instructions to stay away from werewolves, who happen to be Bella's good friends, also comes under the jurisdiction of controlling, while he also makes most of Bella’s decisions without her even questioning it. Under him she becomes like a weakened infant, entirely subservient and reliant.  Can anyone say 'co-dependent'?

Dakota Johnson E.L. James Sam Taylor-Wood Charlie Hunnam Ian Somerhalder Mila Kunis Shailene Woodley Emma Watson Garrett Hedlund

It's less than a year until the Fifty Shades of Grey movie is due in cinemas yet there doesn't seem to have been any firm casting decisions made. The movie, which will be an adaptation from EL James' best-selling erotic fiction of the same name, will have British director Sam Taylor-Johnson (Nowhere Boy) at its helm but nothing more appears to have been set in concrete.

Will Dakota Johnson Really Take The Lead 50 Shades Character?

The role of Christian Grey - the billionaire with a BDSM fetish - has been the most media-covered role so far, with Ian Somerhalder wanting the role, Garrett Hedlund rejecting the role and Taylor-Johnson's own husband, Aaron, rumored for the part. However, it has emerged that we may know who plays student-turned-sex-slave Anastasia Steele first, namely Dakota Johnson.

Shailene Woodley's 'The Spectacular Now', Best Teen Romance In Years? [Trailer]

Shailene Woodley Miles Teller

The Spectacular Now could be the movie that finally makes Shailene Woodley a star. Sure, she was great in The Descendants and there's talk of Fifty Shades of Grey - which we really hope she doesn't do because it'll be atrocious - though James Ponsoldt's new movie could really be the one.

The movie stars Miles Teller as a perpetually drunk and popular high school senior who falls for the astonishingly 'normal' Aimiee (Woodley). The first couple of scenes in the trailer suggest this could be your run-of-the-mill teen romance, though it begins to evolve to reveal a real story.

It comes as no surprise that 500 Days of Summer scribes Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber are behind The Spectacular Now. It's familiar boy-meets-girl territory, though seems to pack a punch.

Kate Winslet, 37, Pregnant With A Miniature Rocknroller

Kate Winslet Sam Mendes Shailene Woodley Jason Reitman Richard Branson

Oscar winning actress Kate Winslet is pregnant with her first child to husband Ned Rocknroll. The 37-year-old will become a mother for the third time - she is also a parent to 12-year-old Mia with her first ex-husband Jim Threapleton and 9-year-old Joe with her second, Sam Mendes.

Winslet tied the knot with the fantastically named Ned Rocknroll in December after a year and a half of dating. He is the nephew of billionaire Virgin mogul Richard Branson. The actress had never ruled out having more children and told InStyle back in 2006 that she was "hoping to have more kids...I don't know whether one or two. Oh, God, I would love to have more."

Incidentally, Winslet's recently wrapped up filming the Jason Reitman-directed drama Labor Day in which she plays a depressed single mother who offers a wounded escaped convict a ride. As police search the town, the mother and her young son gradually learn his true story as their options become increasingly limited. The movie also stars Tobey Maguire and Josh Brolin and hits theaters on January 31, 2014.

Divergent: Kate Winslet Leads Hollywood Charge Into Young Adult Movies

Kate Winslet Jennifer Lawrence Stanley Tucci Philip Seymour Hoffman Michael Sheen Shailene Woodley Theo James

Kate Winslet is the latest Hollywood A-lister to make the move into the thriving young adult market after signing on for a big screen adaptation of 'Divergent,' the first of a trilogy of dystopian novels by Veronica Roth. Jennifer Lawrence and Philip Seymour Hoffman both star in the forthcoming Hunger Games sequel Catching Fire, while Twilight and The Lovely Bones featured respected actors Michael Sheen and Stanley Tucci.

The young-adult movie market is growing at a serious rate, something that's not gone undetected by Winslet's agent, clearly. The British star will play the cold and calculable Jeanine Matthews in the movie about a society that is divided into five factions that define how a person lives their life. For example, the Abnegation people are selfless, while those residing in the Erudite neighbourhood devote themselves to a lifelong pursuit of knowledge. Winslet will play the leader of the Eruduite, according to studio Summit Entertainment.

It's shaping up to be a pretty impressive cast, with actress of the moment Shailene Woodley, 21, and British star Theo James, 28, already having signed up. The movie is set for release in March 2014.
