At The Behest Of North Korea, Sony Cancels Release Of 'The Interview'

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen's anger at Amy Pascal and Sony after being asked to make edits to a particularly gory scene in The Interview was all too apparent in a recent leaked email. "This is now a story of Americans changing their movie to make North Koreans happy," he wrote to Pascal in an email dated 15 August. "That is a very damning story."

The InterviewSeth Rogen [L] and James Franco [R] star in The Inteview, which will no longer be released

What would Rogen think now, then, after Sony cancelled the release of the comedy about a fictional assassination of North Korea's leader. The Sony hackers had been incensed by the film, threatening to continue to leak private documents from the studio unless it refrained from release the film, starring Rogen and Franco. The threats led many to assume the hackers were based in the controversial state. Sources suggest Washington are close to announcing that the North Korean government were behind the attack.

Seth Rogen, Diana Bang, Evan Goldberg and Dan Sterling - ****File Photo** * SONY BOSSES CANCEL THE INTERVIEW RELEASE Sony Pictures executives have officially pulled plans to release SETH ROGEN and JAMES FRANCO's controversial new comedy THE INTERVIEW after hackers threatened the safety of filmgoers. The movie, about two Americans who set out on a mission to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, was due to hit cinemas in the U.S. and Canada on Christmas Day (25Dec14), but its release was thrown into doubt this week (begs15Dec14) after the cyber criminals responsible for stealing material from Sony's databases threatened to carry out 9/11-style terrorist attacks on any theatres screening the film. Officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) insisted there was "no credible intelligence to indicate an active plot against movie theatres within the United States," but the worrying missive prompted the cancellation of The Interview's New York premiere on Thursday (18Dec14), while Rogen and Franco scrapped all of their promotional appearances. On Wednesday (17Dec14), five of America's top movie theatre chains announced they would not be screening the comedy in light of the security threats, and now Sony bosses have completely axed The Interview's release. A statement released by Sony representatives reads: "In light of the decision by the majority of our exhibitors not to show the film The Interview, we have decided not to move forward with the planned December 25 theatrical release. We respect and understand our partners' decision and, of course, completely share their paramount interest in the safety of employees and theater-goers. "Sony Pictures has been the victim of an unprecedented criminal assault against our employees, our customers, and our business. Those who attacked us stole our intellectual property, private emails, and sensitive and proprietary material, and sought to destroy our spirit and our morale - all apparently to thwart the release of a movie they did not like. New York Premiere Of 'The Interview' Reportedly Cancelled Amid Threats

The Interview, the now very, very controversial new comedy from Seth Rogen and James Franco has had it glitzy New York premiere cancelled after another threat was made by the group thought to be behind the recent Sony hack.

The film, which centres on an attempted assassination of North Korean president Kim Jong Un, was supposed to have its big premiere at Manhattan's Sunshine Cinema on Thursday evening (December 18th). Sony Leak: Sony Terrified Of "Desperately Unfunny" Movie 'The Interview'

Seth Rogen James Franco

There was absolutely an air of uncertainty about Amy Pascal's leaked emails to Seth Rogen. The comedy actor was unwilling to make edits to his controversial movie The Interview but, on the face of it, Pascal seemed a little disinterested anyway.

The InterviewSeth Rogen [L] and James Franco [R] star in The Interview, though the executives have their doubts

The executives ended up getting their way and altering the gory final scene in the movie, during which Kim Jong Un's head explodes and is set aflame. However, in a new set of leaked emails, it appears the head honchos hate the entire movie anyway, calling it too offensive, "desperately unfunny" and likely to fail given the starring berth of James Franco.

'The Interview': Why It Could Only Ever Have Been James Franco And Seth Rogen

James Franco Seth Rogen Evan Goldberg Lizzy Caplan

'The Interview' has already become arguably the most controversial comedy of the moment, with its less than sensitive approach to the crisis in North Korea. Nonetheless, it's another tremendously funny venture from a comedy duo we just can't get enough of.

Franco and Rogen are the comedy duo of the moment

James Franco and Seth Rogen appear to be simply inseparable at the moment; having been best buddies since meeting on the set of late nineties show 'Freaks and Geeks', the pair have collaborated  on numerous projects such as 2008's Golden Globe nominated 'Pineapple Express', Evan Goldberg's memorable 'This Is the End' (in which they play themselves) and Franco's own film adaptation of William Faulkner's 'The Sound and the Fury' (yeah, we couldn't imagine them doing 'serious' either).

James Franco And Seth Rogen's New Comedy 'The Interview' Pushed Back To December

James Franco Seth Rogen

Originally scheduled to release in October, The Interview is co-directed by Evan Goldberg (who also directed This is the End) and Seth Rogen, and is based around a celebrity talk show host (Franco) and his producer (Rogen) who are tasked with assasinating North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un. The film has upset North Korea, who unsurprisingly aren't seeing the funny side, but as it turns out, audiences won't be seeing it either- at least, not for another two months.

We're pretty sure that Orlando Bloom has managed to win over a good few thousand more fans after striking a fierce blow in the direction of Justin Bieber's head, but we can think of quite a few other stars who wouldn't mind a go either.

Come and have a go!

The story goes that Bieber met the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' actor at Cipriani restaurant in Miami where he extended a hand which Bloom did not shake. Then things start to get a bit sketchy: some sources claim he said, 'She was good' to Bloom, in reference to his alleged relationship with his ex-wife Victoria's Secret model Miranda Kerr, while TMZ claims Bieber shouted 'What's up, bitch?' at the actor. Either way, eyewitnesses reveal Bloom threw a good punch at the singer - to most of the audience's utter delight by the sound of things - though it still isn't clear whether or not any damage was caused.

The Interview

Seth Rogen Vs. North Korea: Seth Rogen should be feeling a little nervous right now. The actor and funnyman, who is preparing for the fall release of new movie The Interview, has been threatened after North Korea issued an official complaint to the UN. The shady country raised its hackles over the plot of Rogen's new movie, which depicts a plot to kill dictator Kim Jong-Un. This is unbelievable. If you want to thumb your nose at the Supreme Leader, go giggle at the poster - it's hilarious.

George Clooney Vs. The Daily Mail: George Clooney should only have seating arrangements and wedding cake tasting on his mind at the moment but the Gravity actor has had to engage in battle with The Daily Mail over comments the tabloid made alleging that the mother of Clooney's fiancée, Amal Alamuddin, was not happy with her daughters upcoming nuptials on religious grounds - a claim the actor has called a "lie." Clooney got angry, the Mail apologised, Clooney got angrier.

22 Jump Street Review

Very Good

A consistently hilarious stream of in-jokes keeps the audience in fits of laughter even if there's virtually no plot to this follow-up to the 2012 hit 21 Jump Street. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum revive their amusing double-act to poke fun at sequels and franchises amid silly set-pieces and starry cameos. And it gives filmmakers Phil Lord and Christopher Miller their second terrific comedy of the year, after The Lego Movie.

Following their successful bust of a high school drug ring, undercover officers Schmidt and Jenko (Hill and Tatum) are assigned by their grumpy captain (Ice Cube) to infiltrate a university and track down who's dealing the new drug whyphy. But both get distracted by life on campus: Schmidt begins a romance with Maya (Amber Stevens), while Jenko finds his meathead soul-mate in football teammate Zook (Wyatt Russell). With their partnership in jeopardy, Schmidt and Jenko must refocus on a spring break trip to Mexico, where they discover an old nemesis (Peter Stormare) on the loose.

Using a non-stop series of gags about how follow-up movies are more expensive and less original, the filmmakers go about proving this hypothesis with amusingly overwrought sets and a chaotic, derivative narrative that has very little momentum. Meanwhile, they pack every moment of the film with witty humour that's played expertly by Hill and Tatum, who rekindle their chemistry with a steady barrage of gay double entendre that reveals the movie's true nature as a brom-com. On the other hand, neither the actors nor the filmmakers are willing to push things too far, so they settle for silly vulgarity instead of any black comedy or edgy humour.

Seth Rogen Critic Uploads Video In Face Of Backlash Over Shooting Suggestion

Seth Rogen Judd Apatow

A Washington Post critic drew such a backlash with her suggestion that Seth Rogen's "frat boy" genre of comedy movies inspired Elliot Rodger's recent Californian mass shooting that she has felt compelled to upload a video attempting to explain the comments she made in her article.

"In singling out Neighbors and Judd Apatow, I by no means meant to cast blame on those movies or Judd Apatow's work for this heinous action - obviously not," she says. "The whole reason that I weighed in on this issue was that [Rodger] had created this video on YouTube that seemed to be such a product of the entertainment industry that he did grow up in, literally and also just as a member of the culture."

There were big changes in the box office chart this weekend, with Neighbors easily charging past the previous highest earner, The Amazing Spider-Man 2. While Neighbors had one of the highest debuts for an original R-rated comedy with $51,1 million, Spider-Man’s domestic earnings suffered significantly. The superhero flick, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone only made aroumd $37,2 million at home over the Friday-Sunday period – an estimated 59% drop, according to Box Office Mojo. While the home figures are disappointing, the movie is making up for it overseas. To date, it's earned $147.9 million, and is on pace to finish between $210 and $220 million.

Neighbors [Bad Neighbours] Review

Excellent

There's a blast of raucous energy to this lively comedy that sets it apart from the pack; aside from a willingness to get deeply rude and incorrect, the movie is actually very funny. It helps that it's packed with snappy characters and witty dialogue, and that the cast makes the gratuitously vulgar humour come to life in surprising ways.

It opens with happy couple Mac and Kelly (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne), whose idyllic life with their ridiculously cute baby is interrupted when a frat house moves in next door. They want to be cool about it, so introduce themselves and nicely ask the fraternity leaders Teddy and Pete (Zac Efron and Dave Franco) to keep it down. They even indulge in a bit of partying themselves. But the noise only gets louder, and when Mac and Kelly call the cops in a moment of desperation, they spark a war that escalates into a series of crazy practical jokes. This also gets the fraternity in trouble with their university administrator (Lisa Kudrow), which only fuels the battle.

Director Nicholas Stoller (The Five-Year Engagement) keeps things moving briskly, packing every scene with shamelessly coarse humour. For every joke that falls flat (like a breast-feeding set-piece), there are five more gags immediately following that generate gut-busting laughter. While the plot is little more than a series of elaborate pranks, there's an unstoppable momentum that builds to a riotous party climax. Even more important is the way the actors are allowed to twist their stereotypical characters to add some meaningful subtext.

'Bad Neighbours' Reviews: Cheap, Nasty, Juvenile And Brilliant

Seth Rogen Zac Efron

Part frat comedy, part coming-of age-story, part-generational warfare and part slapstick comedy, ‘Bad Neighbors’ portrays a battle between the middle class utopia that is suburban America, and the rebellious, newly freed ethos adopted by a particularly vitriolic fraternity. It’s Efron v Rogen.

Bad NeighborsZac Efron in 'Bad Neighbours'

The obvious contrast here is that of the Hollywood hunk and the alternative geek; Rogen has carved out a strong and reliable fan base with movies like Superbad and Pineapple Express, even if the critics aren’t always on his side. While Mr. Braff is certainly trying to mould his career towards serous dramatic roles, while comedy stints like this – for an young-adult audience – are certainly… well paid.

Seth Rogen Mocks Pal James Franco's Instagram Scandal On 'SNL'

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen didn't let James Franco live down his recently embarrassing Instagram scandal, while performing his 'Saturday Night Live' opening monologue.

The 31 year-old comedic actor poked fun at his 'Pineapple Express' co-star for trying to hit on a 17 year-old girl last week.

During the opening skit, Rogen told the audience that in order to remember everything for his 'SNL' hosting gig, he wrote down this past week in a diary.

Kermiggy Vs. Kimye - The Muppets Mock Kim Kardashian & Kanye West's Vogue Cover

Kim Kardashian Kanye West The Muppets James Franco Seth Rogen Anna Wintour

A war of words has been waging on social media between those who believe Kim Kardashian is the height of fashion and sophistication and those who feel her name should not be mentioned in the same sentence as such words. Since she appeared on the cover of US Vogue with fiancé Kanye West, a number of couples have stepped forward to show they can out do the loved up couple. These aren't just any couples either: Miss Piggy and Kermit as well as James Franco and Seth Rogen have made their own photographic contribution to the Kimye Vogue debate.

Kim Kardashian wangled the cover of US Vogue, realised on Friday (21st March).

Miss Piggy is a style icon. No one can possibly deny this: she can sing (sort of); dance (most definitely); has worked for Vogue (as a Plus Size Editor); and has graced our screens since 1974. She's one of the greatest stars of all time, yet she was still pipped to the cover of Vogue by none other than the reigning Queen of popular culture, Kim Kardashian. We can weep at the cruel injustice - everyone knows Miss Piggy and her beau are considerably more Vogue friendly than Kardashian and Kanye but alas it was not meant to be.

That's why he's such a good actor! It's really sad, actually." The friends starred together in the stoner comedy Pineapple Express.

Jon Favreau Zac Efron Seth Rogen Kristen Bell South by Southwest

For those who care about films in the slightest, South by Southwest is the place to be this week. The conference, which runs March 7th through March 16th in Austin, Texas, is the place for enthusiasts to see the latest films, get album previews and generally have tons of fun. So, four days into SXSW, what are the highlights?

The VM cast was out in full force at SXSW.

First of all, there was Seth Rogen and Zac Efron’s Neighbors, which pits Rogen against Efron in a battle for dominance over a suburban street. In this comedy, directed by Nicholas Stoller from a script by Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, Rogen plays one half of a newly married couple, who are just settling into their cozy suburban nest. Efron and his band of frat boys, however, are there to ruin everything. According to THR, Neighbors got big laughs at its Paramount Theater premiere, so it might be one to look out for later in the year.

Senators Leave Before Seth Rogen's Moving Appeal In The Name Of Alzheimer's Sufferers

Seth Rogen Lauren Miller

Most film fans probably know Seth Rogen as the slightly immature lead of films like Pineapple Express, Knocked Up and This Is The End. Real-life Rogen, however, had a serious problem on his mind, when he stood before a Senate committee to appeal for funding for Alzheimer’s care and research. Rogen shared the story of his mother in law, whose rapidly progressing Alzheimer educated the actor on the more severe, unseen effects of the disease. Peppering his speech with his trademark self-deprecating humor, Rogen also shared some of the work of Hilarity for Charity – an organization he and his wife started to educate young people about the effects of Alzheimer's. Rogen proudly explained that many college students are now starting their own fundraising campaigns to help Alzheimer's sufferers and their families.

Rogen and wife Lauren Miller started Hilarity for Charity, influenced by their own experience with Alzheimer's.

In a video, shared by ABC, Rogen said that before experiencing it firsthand, he was in the dark about the disease, thinking "it was something only really, really old people got" and involved "forgetting your keys and mismatched shoes."

The Seth Rogen 'Starring' Parody Of 'Her' Might Be The Best Thing You See All Week [Video]

Her
Her might not be the most prominent Oscar contender, but it is still one helluva movie

First off we were treated to a Phillip Seymour Hoffman-featuring parody of the new Spike Jonze movie Her, one that used cut-up snippets of the Oscar-winner's film repertoire in place of Scarlett Johansson's soothing utterances. Last night (25 Jan.) we saw Jonah Hill lampoon the film on Saturday Night Live, but earlier this week we're sure the best parody of them all was uploaded on to YouTube.

'Him' doesn't actually star any big names, but it does feature one heck of a good impression of the loveable Canadian comic Seth Rogen. The YouTube channel Paul Gale Comedy created and uploaded the parody, which pokes fun at the Oscar contender as well as gently ribbing Rogen, mocking his penchant for da 'erb and also mirroring his distinctive laugh spot on. It's probably the best portrayal of Seth Rogen since Seth Rogen played Seth Rogen in This Is The End.

Seth Rogen Weighs In On Justin Bieber Arrest: "He's A Piece Of Sh*t"

Seth Rogen Justin Bieber

Seth Rogen has given his opinion on the recent arrest of Justin Bieber for DUI and resisting arrest, and he didn't tread lightly when voicing what he really thinks of the singer. The comic actor and writer labelled the much-despised star a "piece of sh*t" on Twitter, shortly after the 'news' of the Canadian pop star's arrest was announced.

Seth Rogen
There are also rumours that Justin stole his quiff look from Rogen, which gives him more reason to be a hater

Rogen hit out at the Biebs following his arrest in Miami on Thursday, 23 January, morning and to put it lightly, the This Is The End star clearly isn't a Belieber. Seth tweeted: "All jokes aside, Justin Bieber is a piece of s**t."

Kelly and Mac Radner are a young married couple with a baby daughter who are starting to feel a little claustrophobic inside their family home and are desperate to get back into the party spirit. In a bid to get their new neighbours to keep the wild partying to a minimum, they attempt to welcome the seemingly friendly new arrivals. To no avail, however, as they end up having to call the police when one party gets out of control and find themselves subsequently being terrorised in all areas of their lives by the frat boys. Determined not to be victimised by a group of college kids, the Radner's respond with their own revenge tactics - but who will have the upper hand in the end?
