Kasabian star Serge Pizzorno stopped taking drugs so the band would only be remembered for their music.
The group's guitarist admits he and the rest of the band used to party like "tomorrow didn't matter" and would take lots of illegal substances but realised as soon as their work started to suffer, it was time to stop.
He said: "We were absolutely crazy. Because you don't know how long it's gonna last and you don't give a f**k about anything. You do an album and you think this is gonna be it so let's just enjoy it. Tomorrow didn't matter. We lived at 100 miles an hour.
"But I just got bored. For me, the most important thing is the art, the music and the things we leave behind. If your music starts to suffer, then it's not worth it."
Serge knows other rock stars can continue producing great music as well as living life in the fast lane, but insists the lifestyle wasn't for him.
He told Q magazine: "I mean there are people who can carry on that way. But I was never that interested in destroying. I was more interested in trying to get better and leave behind a legacy of incredible music, not just a few funny stories."
