Selena Gomez' parents didn't realise they had been fired as her managers.

The 21-year-old singer's mother Mandy Teefey and her step-father Brian have controlled her affairs since she shot to fame in 2007, but the brunette beauty decided last month to recruit someone else, and it is only since the news became public last week that the pair realised the decision was final.

Mandy told TMZ she thought their conversation in March was ''just talk'' and they sat down again with their daughter after the news broke to ensure she was ''absolutely sure'' she wanted to seek new guidance, and the former Disney star said yes.

The showbiz matriarch insists she respects her daughter's decision and plans to continue producing several projects with her, including the upcoming movie 'The Sky Is Everywhere'.

It was claimed that the 'Spring Breakers' star decided to end their professional relationship as she felt she had ''outgrown'' her parents.

The 'Come & Get It' hitmaker has argued with Mandy and Brian on many occasions over the direction of her career and her on/off relationship with troubled star Justin Bieber, but it is believed family friction wasn't to blame for their split.

Mandy and Brian made it clear last month that they were unhappy about Selena spending time with Justin, who has had a number of run-ins with the law, as they believe he's responsible for driving her to rehab in January.

A source said previously: ''They're doing their best to supervise them. They're tolerating it as long as they know that there is someone who has eyes on them all the time.''
