James Franco playing a drug and arms dealer? Selena Gomez doing his dirty work? Gucci Mane parading around like he owns the joint?! Spring Breakers is shaping up to be wackiest movie of the year. Sure, on paper it's got Razzies written all over it, though we're predicting Harmony Korine's (Gummo) new film will be one of the most talked about flicks of 2013.
The film stars Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson and Rachel Korine as four college girls who are stuck on campus while their fellow students party on the coast for Spring Break. Of course the only thing to do in that situation is rob a restaurant in order to fund their vacation, right? Of course, that's exactly what they do. The trailer sees the girls heading for the ocean in high spirits, but wait! What's that we hear? Police sirens!
The girls are quickly arrested for the robbery, though find themselves bailed out by a drug and arms dealer who wants them to do some dirty work. Which is when we're introduced to a frankly terrifying looking James Franco, complete with corn rows and Hawaiian shirt. "I saw you all in there, you look like nice people, come on y'all, why you acting 'spicious?" he tells the scantily clad girls upon their release. "Come on its Spring Break, you get crazy!" In one particular scene, Franco yells, "Spring Break bitches!" before he and girls empty automatic weapons into the west-coast sky. Brilliant.
There's clearly more to this movie than meets the eye. It was selected to compete for the Golden Lion at the 69th Venice International Film Festival, where it received mixed reviews, though some extremely favourable. Xan Brooks of The Guardian said it was Harmony Korine's "most fully realised, purely satisfying feature film since Gummo," while Emma Seligman of The Huffington Post called it "Scarface meets Britney Spears."
Spring Breakers hits theaters in the U.S. on March 22, 2013.
