Family Affair: The Complete Series Review

Weak
If the 1966-'71 sitcom Family Affair is remembered at all these days, it's for the jaunty theme music and for Mrs. Beasley, a doll that had at least as much personality and a longer shelf life than most of the cast. Hauled out of the video vault and dusted off for a DVD box set, it's TV to nap by.

The show, sort of an all-white Diff'rent Strokes, finds successful New York engineer Bill Davis (Brian Keith) volunteering to adopt the three orphaned children of his suddenly deceased sister. Teenage Sissy (Kathy Garver) and adorable young twins Buffy (Anissa Jones) and Jody (Johnny Whitaker) arrive from Terre Haute, Indiana and quickly settle in at Uncle Bill's sprawling apartment, a lovely home managed by his "gentlemen's gentleman" (what we would call a butler), Mr. French (Sebastian Cabot).

The Jungle Book Review

Excellent
The Jungle Book may not have much in the way of story (see also Tarzan: Boy raised in the jungle is returned to civilization, plus singing/dancing). However, it's got some of the best songs Disney ever did, including the swinging "I Wan'na Be Like You" and the svelte "Trust In Me." Baloo the bear has since become an institution in the American cartoonisphere.

Twice-Told Tales Review

Very Good
In the tradition of Tales from the Darkside comes this trilogy of stories drawn from Nathaniel Hawthorne stories and each starring Vincent Price. Watch as he and Sebastian Cabot discover a youth serum dripping in the basement -- and use it to resurrect Cabot's dead fiancee! Other tales tell of a poisonous plant Vinny uses to ensure his daughter stays by his side, and a rendition of The House of Seven Gables. Well produced and solidly acted all around. And the stories fit perfectly into the 40-minute vignettes.

The Time Machine (1960) Review

OK
Probably edgy and thrilling in its day, The Time Machine hasn't aged so well. The menacing Morlocks are just fat guys in blue paint, and Wells turned out to be not-so-right predicting a nuclear holocaust in 1966. Oh well. An interesting side note: Fragments of virtually every episode of the original Star Trek can be found within this film.
