Seann William Scott and Johnny Knoxville's new movie The Dukes of Hazzard
has defied critics by opening at the top of the US box office with a weekend
tally of $30.6 million (GBP17 million).
The movie remake of the cult TV series has received lukewarm reviews and
harsh criticism from the show's original star Ben Jones, who called for a
boycott of what he deems a "sleazy insult".
But fans ignored the jabs and flocked to see the film, which features
Jessica Simpson making her movie debut as DAISY DUKE.
Hit comedy Wedding Crashers took second place with weekend takings of
$16.5 million (GBP9.1 million), followed by Johnny Depp's CHARLIE AND THE
CHOCOLATE FACTORY with $10.6 million (GBP5.8 million).
SKY HIGH and MUST LOVE DOGS round out the top five with $9.05 million
(GBP5 million) and $7.42 million (GBP4.1 million) respectively.
