Film and TV director Lee Daniels has settled the defamation lawsuit brought by Sean Penn, with an apology for insinuating that the actor physically abused his ex-wife Madonna and with a donation to the charity Penn founded.

The 55 year old actor issued a $10 million defamation suit against Daniels, the co-creator of smash TV drama ‘Empire’, last September after the director had leapt to the defence of the series’ star Terrence Howard after he’d received intense criticism after admitting striking his ex-wife.

Sean Penn Breaks Silence Over 'El Chapo' Interview - "My Article Has Failed"

Sean Penn

Sean Penn has used a new interview with CBS’ Charlie Rose to break his silence over his infamous interview with Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman, the Mexican drug lord who was recently detained by authorities after twice escaping from maximum security prisons in the country.

The Hollywood star’s interview with Guzman appeared on Saturday (January 9th) on the website of Rolling Stone magazine, the day after his arrest. It was conducted at an undisclosed location in Mexico in late 2015, with Guzman allegedly speaking because he wanted his life story to be made into a movie.

Legal Experts Say Sean Penn Is Unlikely To Face Prosecution Over 'El Chapo' Interview

Sean Penn

Sean Penn may or may not be subject to legal investigations by the United States following his clandestine meeting with the convicted drug kingpin ‘El Chapo’ in October last year.

Hollywood actor Penn, adopting the real-life role of a reporter for Rolling Stone for the interview, met with Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman in October 2015, who was on the run in Mexico having escaped a maximum security prison in the country back in July.

The head of Sinaloa drugs cartel and whom US authorities believe has brought more than 500 tonnes of cocaine to America over decades, Guzman was apparently then subsequently tracked and eventually apprehended on Friday (January 8th).

Madonna has denied that her ex-husband Sean Penn ever struck her during their short-lived marriage in the 1980s, as she offered up evidence on his behalf of his defamation case against the co-creator of the hit TV show ‘Empire.

Lee Daniels, who helped create the hit Fox show, gave an interview to The Hollywood Reporter in September this year defending cast member Terrence Howard, who had come in for criticism after he had admitted hitting his wife. Daniels had said that Howard “ain’t done nothing different than Marlon Brando or Sean Penn,” but because he is black, “he’s some fucking demon. That’s a sign of the time, of race, of where we are right now in America.”

'The Gunman' Turns Sean Penn Into The New Liam Neeson

Sean Penn Liam Neeson

After Liam Neeson launched himself as an action star at age 56 with 'Taken' (2008), middle-aged actors are showing up in cinemas to prove that they can take it too. Now with 'The Gunman' (directed by Taken's Pierre Morel), it's Sean Penn's turn. This seems like an unlikely role for the double Oscar winner, but he says he never thinks about his career when he takes on a job.

"I'm more of a movie by movie person," he said. "I take each one as its own animal. Harrison Ford made a whole career out of this stuff. So it's not a new trend - it's what I call 'geri-action'! Many of these are 'wink at the audience' kinds of movies, but 'The Gunman' was more a straight line. There were consequences to the violence - that appealed to me more."

Like Father Like Son? Sean Penn’s Son Hopper Penn Assaults Paparazzo, Shouts Racist Abuse

Sean Penn

Sean Penn’s son Hopper seems to be taking after his father… but not in a good way. Hopper was caught on camera following his father into a medical building in Beverly Hills and pushing a paparazzi videographer out of the way. Not content with pushing him, the 19 year old then got into a verbal spat with the man, calling him a “fa**ot” and a “n***er.”

Not a good look for Hopper, who was questioned by TMZ about his behaviour and at least had the decency to see the error of his ways and apologise. “I was accosted by paparazzi and made to feel like an animal - threatened and under attack, but that does not condone my own actions,” said Hopper. He added “I deeply regret my choice of words.” Luckily for Hopper, the paparazzo told nearby cops that he did not wish to take the matter any further and told them that he did not wish to press charges.

So, Did Shia LaBeouf Drop Acid For 'The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman?'

Shia LaBeouf Sean Penn Lars Von Trier

Remember last year when we reported Shia LaBeouf had dropped acid for 24 hours to prepare for a role in The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman? At the time, the 26-year-old told USA Today that he wanted to deliver a realistic rendering of a scene in which he character trips on LSD. "There's a way to do an acid trip like Harold & Kumar, and there's a way to be on acid," he said. "What I know of acting, Sean Penn actually strapped up to that (electric) chair in Dead Man Walking. These are the guys that I look up to," he said.

Well, the movie - which tells the story of a young man who heads to Romania after the death of his mother - premiered at the Sundance Film Festival this week. MTV News caught up with the actor to clear up the acid story, asking, "The character drops acid and you did that for the role. You did it because you wanted to be in that headspace, apparently?" LaBeouf appeared to go into detail about the process of preparing for a scene with the use of drugs, "I'd never done acid before. I remember sending Evan tapes. I remember trying to conjure this and sending tapes. And Evan being like 'That's good, but that's not but, that is," adding, "You reach out to friends and gauge where you're at. I was sending tapes around and I'd get 50 percents from people and that just starts creeping me out. I was getting really nervous toward the end. Not cause I wanted to be on drugs - I'm not trying to mess with the set or anything like that. It's really just fear that propels people."

LaBeouf was also reported to have drunk real moonshine to prepare for the gangster drama Lawless and was expected to film real sex scene for Lars Von Trier's Nymphomaniac before the idea was scrapped. Following its Sundance screening, The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman courted positive reviews, with The Hollywood Reporter saying, "LaBeouf projects a degree of emotional recklessness that's both disarming and disconcerting to watch."

Ryan Gosling's Newest Flick "Gangster Squad" Gets Panned By The Critics

Ryan Gosling Emma Stone Sean Penn

The premiere for Ryan Gosling’s newest high-budget flick, Gangster Squad, took place last Monday and early reviews for the film are in.

Let’s just say they aren’t exactly favorable. It may be too early to estimate its success at the box office, but the campy gangster movie is certainly not a hit with the critics – managing to get only 33% on movie review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes and unfavorable reviews all around. According to the LA Times, the film does show promise, but ultimately misses “the soul of the era”. The Guardian calls it “slick but shallow” and that seems to be the overall consensus.

Nevertheless, the film does feature some Hollywood favorites like Emma Stone and Sean Penn (and Gosling, of course), so, good or not, it’s bound to draw in audiences at least for the first week. Meanwhile, the stars of the flick have been making the rounds promoting it and that includes more than one interview where they reveal fun details about the shoot, such as Gosling’s disappointment with the tiny “lady gun” he was stuck with for the flick. It might not be the most thrilling piece of information, but hey, anything that gives us the chance to look at beautiful people for a bit, is alright. Check out the trailer for Gangster Squad below.

Hot Tickets! This Weekend's US Movie Releases, Zero Dark Thirty, Gangster Squad,

Ryan Gosling Kathryn Bigelow Ewan McGregor Emma Stone Sean Penn Naomi Watts

Three films on opposite spectrums of the genre-scale go head-to-head for your hard earned cash this weekend; taut political thriller Zero Dark Thirty, 'cool' action flick Gangster Squad and heart warming drama, The Impossible all make their U.S. bows, so which one is it to be? Luckily, we can help you narrow it down.

We'll start with easily the most controversial of the bunch: Zero Dark Thirty. Directed by the unflinching Kathryn Bigelow, Zero is the story od America's hunt for Osama Bin Laden and the ugly steps it took to get him. Criticized for both suggesting that torture could work (by liberals) and that America used torture in the first place (by republicans), you can bolster your stock in the inevitable debate by going to see it. Oh, and it's a really good film, too. With an incredibly strong critical response and 5 Oscar nominations, you'll be hard pressed to see a finer film this weekend.

Is Ryan Gosling just too perfect? Here he is arriving to the Gangster Squad premiere with his mother

It was almost certainly the first real big premiere of 2013, and the cast and crew of Gangster Squad certainly didn't disappoint, the bulk of the Ruben Fleischer-directed stars all turning out at the world famous Grauman's Chinese Theater in Los Angeles for the premiere. Ryan Gosling led the way, as he tends to, after bringing on his mother. What a good egg.

Ryan Gosling in The Gangster SquadRaise A Glass: Ryan Gosling Looking Dapper As Sgt Jerry Wooters In The Gangster Squad

Ruben Fleischer's long delayed movie Gangster Squad finally hits theaters worldwide this week, chronicling the LAPD's fight to keep the East Coast Mafia types out of Los Angeles in the 1940s and 50s. It's a big subject to tackle, though the Zombieland filmmaker has acquired quite the cast, with Ryan Gosling, Sean Penn, Josh Brolin and Emma Stone all lining up in the gritty drama.

The reviews are mixed, though Gangster Squad is likely to trouble the Box Office analysts this weekend and could find itself sitting pretty in the No.1 spot by Sunday. The movie's biggest draw is clearly Oscar winner Sean Penn playing Brooklyn mobster Mickey Cohen. In 1949 Los Angeles, Cohen ran the show on the West Coast too, reaping the financial rewards from drugs, guns and prostitutes. Though he intimidates just about everyone in the city, a team of LAPD outsiders led by John O'Mara (Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Gosling) come together to bring Cohen down, for good.

Bad News For Cartoonish Gangster Squad - Strong Cast Hasn't Saved Film Noir Melodrama

Ryan Gosling Josh Brolin Emma Stone Giovanni Ribisi Sean Penn Nick Nolte

After a delayed release, the first major review of Gangster Squad has hit the web.

Unfortunately for the movie’s execs, Hollywood Reporter’s resident film critic has deemed it not to be worth the wait. It looks as though this film noir crime thriller is going to fall flat in comparison to leading movies of the genre, such as the excellent LA Confidential, with which this movie has many aesthetic similarities.

Gangster Squad, starring Ryan Gosling, Josh Brolin, Emma Stone and Giovanni Ribisi alongside Sean Penn and Nick Nolte, is set in 1949, an adaptation of Paul Lieberman’s book about the LA mob leader Mickey Cohen. It was originally pulled to re-shoot some scenes in the wake of the Aurora Colorado shooting tragedy last year but nonetheless, its arrival has been highly anticipated not least by virtue of its stellar cast. For McCarthy, though, Gangster Squad is lacking in dimension and whereas Mickey Cohen was widely held to be a charming man who kept his dark side under wraps as far as possible, Sean Penn “lays him exclusively as a raving homicidal maniac who might even have given the Nazi hierarchy pause.”

Sean Penn: On Trauma, Haiti And Being A 'Genius'

Sean Penn

Revealing and in-depth interviews from celebrities are sought after by fans, but Sean Penn has gone a step further and has written an honest and humorous essay for Esquire magazine about his life, interests and family.

While his syntax leaves a lot to be desired (he mixes tenses as though he has no concept of time), he opens by linking traumas. From discussing his son's accident which left him needing brain surgery and being pumped full of morphine, which "created kind of a love affair for [Penn] with morphine", to discussing the difficulties the family faced with his divorce, finally leading into Sean's involvement with Haiti. In distinct contrast to his son's head injury and the painkillers he was given, in Haiti "One of the first reports [Penn] saw, they were doing trauma surgeries, amputations - children, with no IV pain medications... And they needed about 350,000 vials of morphine and ketamine. So [he] started putting a little ragtag team together to locate the drugs," he said.

"If you think about how pussified this country has become, right? Haiti is so far from being pussified." Penn, eloquent as always, explains how capable the Haitians were in the wake of the earthquake that killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions from their homes. To get the job done and provide the remote country with painkillers he resorted to blackmail, threatening actors with CNN if they didn't do what he asked and write that 'check'.

Sean Penn Marriage Interview: “What The F*** Was I Doing?” Asks Gangster Squad Actor

Sean Penn Robin Wright

Sean Penn’s marriage to Robin Wright broke down almost three years ago. In an interview with Esquire magazine, Penn reveals that he doesn’t feel as though he’s ever been loved by someone. “As I look back over my life in romance, I don't feel I've ever had that,” he says. “I have been the only one that was unaware of the fraud in a few of these circumstances blindly.”

Talking about his divorce, which made headline news at the time that he and Robin split, he says “When you get divorced, all the truths that come out, you sit there and you go, What the fuck was I doing? What was I doing believing that this person was invested in this way? Which is a fantastically strong humiliation in the best sense. It can make somebody very bitter and very hard and closed off, but I find it does the opposite to me.”

Well, Penn might reckon that he’s not bitter but he’s still got a pretty caustic tongue in his head. In an audio excerpt from the interview, Sean can be heard saying “the biggest thing that frustrates me in the world, is, I just wanna say to everybody, you know that thing above your neck? It’s not decoration. You have to use it. You’re supposed to f***ing use it… I don’t care about the heart. The heart is in the brain. That’s not less emotional, that’s not less romantic.” Wow. Valentine’s day must be a real blast with you, eh, Sean?

Gangster Squad - Trailer Trailer

Mickey Cohen is a dangerous Mafia boss with power over the police and the people of Los Angeles in 1949. His mob and his world revolves around drugs, firearms, prostitutes and casinos with power and money being the only consequence in their criminal misdeeds. However, it's not long before some members of the LAPD begin to question their own methods and power and start to realise that they must be the ones to take down Mickey and his gang but to do so they must hang up their LAPD badges and go into this war without mercy. All they need is five or seven men willing to put their lives on the line against this ruthless mob of forty. But it's not just their own lives threatened in this conflict.

'Gangster Squad' is based on the true story of the real infamous Mickey Cohen which was put into the novel 'Tales from the Gangster Squad' by Paul Lieberman. The crime flick has been directed by Ruben Fleischer ('Zombieland', '30 Minutes or Less') and written by Will Beall ('Castle') in his feature film screenplay debut. It was originally meant to be released in September 2012 but it was pushed back to January 11th 2013 following the tragedy of the Aurora, Colorado movie theater shooting. It was deemed inappropriate for it to be released so soon after given that one scene in the movie was to involve a similar theater massacre.
