The show is pure genius and pure simplicity: Larry Sanders (Garry Shandling) is a late night talk show host on an unspecified network in the post-Carson era. Each week we were treated to the behind-the-scenes antics that go on before such a show can get on the air five nights a week: At its slapstick simplest we have Carol Burnett fleeing spiders by climbing on Larry's back. At its smarmy sickest, we have Larry's agent (Bob Odenkirk) selling him down the river so he can move on to greener pastures: Namely one Jon Stewart, a guest host for the show who became a running theme in later years as a cheap, network-approved replacement for the skewing-too-old Larry.

After the banal disaster that was his Gypsy 83 - a road movie whose low point where Stevie Nicks-obsessive Sara Rue falls in love with an Amish guy at a rest stop - it's truly mystifying as to how Stephens was able to pull another movie together. And yet, here it is. Since audiences have already suffered through not just one but two grim sequels to American Pie (not to mention the straight-to-video Band Camp), Stephens must have thought there was room for one more; albeit unofficial, and gay.

Yes he can! Mickey Blue Eyes, against all odds, is nothing short of fall-down funny - on par with Notting Hill, South Park, and Austin Powers 2 as one of the best comedies of the summer.

Some of the on-stage moments are priceless (during "Jesus 2000": "So what if my ass gets itchy and I'm too busy to worship!?") as are some of the off-stage bits (Scott Thompson's attempt to get his Sony Aibo to go to sleep "because he has this responsibility"). But are you interested in the street preachers or singing beggars outside the show? Are you interested in five minutes about why their equipment is delayed at one show? Do you care whether the guys decide to take a bus from city to city instead of a plane? They sure do talk about it for a long time...

If you aren't familiar with the comedy troupe, the Kids are five guys (Bruce McCulloch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, Scott Thompson, and Dave Foley) who have appeared in 110 episodes of some of the funniest sketch comedy television has offered up in recent years. After ending the series in July 1994, talk of a movie immediately began. Two years later, the end result is here.

"Mickey Blue Eyes" is one of those movies that wouldn't last 20 minutes if the main character wasn't a certifiable moron.
A comedy of the uncomfortable, it's predicated on Hugh Grant, playing an tentative, English, auction house proprietor in New York, allowing himself to become embroiled in the mob when he unknowingly proposes to a mafia princess (Jeanne Tripplehorn).
She declines, crying her eyes out and explaining her background and the family she's tried to put behind her. Romantically, he says it doesn't matter. She exacts one promise from him: That he won't agree to do any favors for her family and won't accept any, either. "That's how they get you," she says. "Then you'll be one of them."
