It seems the team behind 'Doctor Strange' are really hoping that they'll get a sequel for the Marvel smash, and if so they've even got a good idea of what kind of storyline they'd like to pursue in the future based on the comic books.

Doctor Strange'Doctor Strange' stars Benedict Cumberbatch

'Doctor Strange' director Scott Derrickson recently opened up about his ideas for a sequel, and the kind of characters the team may introduce in the possible future. Nightmare, for example, is a supervillain who first appeared in 'Strange Tales' in 1963.

'I really like the character of Nightmare and the concept that the Nightmare Realm is a dimension', Derrickson told IGN. 'That's early - that's like the first Strange tale. I think that's in the introductory episode of Doctor Strange, and I always loved that.'

Also an enemy of Ghost Rider, Nightmare is the demonic ruler of the Dream Dimension who rides around on his horse Dreamstalker. In the comics, he is depicted as being white with green hair and a ragged cape, and in one tale he attempts to torment Strange when the latter forgets to recite a spell before sleep. Of course, that was too much of a heavy subject to bring in to this introductory tale of Stephen Strange.

'We decided not to do that because that's a bit of a complex idea to try to introduce everything we do introduce, and introduce the idea of nightmares themselves as being a dimension', Derrickson added. 'I hope somewhere down the line we do get to explore that because I think that's super cool concept.'

Don't get too excited, however, because a sequel is yet to be confirmed; though it is very likely given that the character will return to the big screen in 2018's 'Avengers: Infinity War'

'Doctor Strange' hits US movie theatres on November 4th 2016.
