20th Century Fox's animated Epic sold more DVDs and Blu-ray Discs than any other Home Video release last week, according to the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart. The studio's home entertainment unit said that 40 percent of its sales were generated by the high-definition Blu-ray format. Animated films, which generally don't benefit from the HD format as much as live-action films and which are aimed principally at kids, whose level of appreciation for HD fare may be limited, rarely see such strong Blu-ray results. Coming in at No. 2 was last week's top seller, Sony's Olympus Has Fallen. In third place was Millennium Entertainment's Killing Season, which bombed theatrically, despite a cast headed by Robert De Niro and John Travolta. On Home Media magazine's rental chart, Olympus Has Fallen held on to the No. 1 spot for the second week in a row. The Jackie Robinson biopic 42 followed in second place, while Scary Movie V debuted in third.
On Jackie Robinson Day, the 66th anniversary of the second-baseman's debut on the Brooklyn Dodgers -- when every MLB player wears Robinson's number 42 on their uniforms -- it was announced that 42, the film about Robinson's first season on the team, had earned more money during its opening weekend than any other baseball movie in history. With $27.5 million in ticket sales it also topped every other sports movie, except 2009's The Blind Side, which opened in 2009 with $34.1 million. The 42 result easily exceeded virtually ever analyst's forecasts and amounted to nearly twice the $15 million that its studio, Warner Bros., had estimated it would earn. Moreover, with a rare A+ CinemaScore rating from audiences, it seemed assured of a long run in theaters and a total gross of around $100 million. On the other hand, the prospects for Scary Movie 5, the only other film to open wide over the weekend, were not so auspicious. It opened in second place with $14.2 million, down 65 percent from the $40.2 million that Scary Movie 4 took in when it opened in 2006. In third place the Fox/Dreamworks Animation feature The Croods slipped a modest 37 percent to $13.1 million in it fourth week, bringing its total domestic gross to date to $142.5 million, while in its third weekend, G.I. Joe: Retaliation dropped 48 percent to $10.9 million, pushing its total past $100 million to $102.5 million.
Scary Movie is back!
And this one might actually be, hold on to your seats, pretty good. The first trailer released for the fifth installment in the franchise shows Ashley Tisdale, Charlie Sheen, Lindsay Lohan and company taking the, well, you-know-what out of every blockbuster movie or pop culture sensation of the past couple of years and they really do have some funny one-liners in the process. “I’ve come back from worse than this,” groans Charlie Sheen (as himself) after taking a door to the groin. Subtle? Perhaps not, but it’s this kind of self awareness that attracts Scary Movie’s target audience into the theatre. That and a bunch of 'things falling on heads' gags, of course. Hey, no one said it was going to be mature.
Now, this might be just a case of “you see it all in the trailer”, but this might be worth seeing even for the format alone. For this most recent installment, the franchise goes into the “found footage” genre of horror, most notably ripping the Paranormal Activity series. The trailer also features references to Inception and Black Swan and who can resist poking fun at films that take themselves that seriously?
