'Lucy' Merges Bessons' Obsessions: Action, And Beautiful Women

Scarlett Johansson Luc Besson

Luc Besson is clearly a cinematic force to reckon with, invading our cinemas this year as a producer (The Homesman) and writer (3 Days to Kill and Brick Mansions). And as a writer-director, his action romp Lucy has already topped the US box office and is expanding globally over the next two weeks to Europe, South America, Africa and Southeast Asia.

Scarlett JohanssonScarlett Johansson in 'Lucy'

Besson hasn't made many films that didn't have some element of action in them. But he never blows things up just for the spectacle. "If the action doesn't have a soul or purpose, I'm not interested," he says. "If it's pure action for its own sake, I enjoy it like a cheeseburger: you eat it, then you're hungry."

'Lucy' Is Fantastic, But There Will Be No Sequel, Says Besson

Scarlett Johansson Luc Besson

Director Luc Besson has generated modest acclaim for his action-thriller Lucy, though the Frenchman says it is unlikely there will be a sequel. Fans of the movie have been clamouring for news of a second movie - as have representatives of Universal Pictures - but Besson told reporters in Taiwan: "I don't see how we can do one."

Scarlett JohanssonScarlett Johansson in 'Lucy'

"It's not made for that," he said in an interview with the local press. "If I find something good enough, maybe I will, but for now I don't even think about it."

Lucy Review

Very Good

Luc Besson gleefully combines two of his favourite movie elements - fit women and wildly insane action - in this raucous guilty pleasure. It's almost as if he's trying to make his own version of Inception, but this is one of those films that only pretends to be brainy and existential. It's actually a slick, silly, improbable action romp. And it's a lot of fun.

The title refers both to the very first female and an American student (Scarlett Johansson) living in Taipei whose loser boyfriend (A Hijacking's Pilou Asbaek) ropes her into making a delivery to notoriously vicious crime boss Jang (Oldboy's Choi Min-sik). Grabbed by Jang's goons, she's forced to become a mule, with a kilo of experimental drugs implanted in her abdomen. When it bursts, the drug allows her to access much more than the 10 percent of the brain humans normally use. By the time she hits 20%, she can already control people and objects around her. And the percentage keeps climbing. So she heads to Paris to meet mental capacity expert Norman (Morgan Freeman) and figure out what to do. But Jang and his army of thugs are in hot pursuit, so she enlists a local cop (Syriana's Amr Waked) to help.

Besson doesn't like to hang around, so the film takes off like a shot, only barely pausing for breath in its brisk 89-minute running time. On-screen captions keep us updated on Lucy's brain capacity, and it's great fun seeing every advancement she makes on her way to 100%. This allows Besson to indulge in deliriously enjoyable mind-bending action sequences that play out like he's a kid with a giant set of very cool toys. Outrageous car chases, giant explosions and random epic shootouts fill the screen as Lucy expands her mind, begins to bend reality around her and transcends the limits of numbers and letters.

"Hercules" Falters, While "Lucy" Shines At The Box Office With $44 Million

Scarlett Johansson Dwayne Johnson

This week at the box office, the sci-fi thriller Lucy won out over slim competition – Hercules, starring Dwayne Johnson and the holdover hit from last week Dawn of the Planet of the Apes took second and third, respectively. Deservingly or not – the reviewers have questioned everything about Lucy from the plot, to the execution, to most of the action. Even Scarlett Johansson’s acting barely gets a pass, thanks to the godawful material she’s working with, according to The Atlantic. Humans only use 10% of their brain? This Luc Besson sci-fi thriller uses even less. Regardless, whatever limited brain capacity Lucy was working with, propelled it to a $44 million weekend, well beyond critical predictions, which put it somewhere around $40 million.

Scarlett Johansson
Only an intense love for Johansson's screen presence can save viewers from scoffing their way through this one.

Brainy "Lucy" Outsmarts Dwayne Johnson's "Hercules" At The Box Office

Scarlett Johansson Dwayne Johnson

Despite lukewarm reviews, the Scarlet Johansson starrer Lucy has gone on to best Dwayne Johnson’s latest crack at a franchise starter, Hercules. Lucy, a sci-fi flick about a woman with unlimited mental capacities is on track to finish the weekend past its projected $35 million. The movie registered $17,1 million on Friday and has seen Johansson’s star rise even higher. With films like 2013’s Under the Skin and Her, her Avengers role as Black Widow (the character is soon to have her own film) and now Lucy, the savvy actress has flexed both her acting brains and brawn in the sci-fi genre.

Scarlett Johansson is only going up.

Though he definitely has a lot of power in his own way, Dwayne Johnson didn’t have enough strength as Hercules at the box office. The eponymous flick, based on a 2011 graphic novel and directed by Brett Ratner took in a disappointing $11 million on Friday. However, as these types of film often do, Hercules fared much better internationally. It was released in 19 markets this week and still may do better than originally projected. Lucy won’t open internationally until next week.

Lucy - Luc Besson Featurette

The cast and crew of 'Lucy' - actors Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman and Amr Waked, and producer Virginie Besson-Silla - talk about their experiences working with director Luc Besson in a short featurette ahead of the release of the new sci-fi movie.

'The most interesting thing about working with Luc is that he's the cameraman', Amr reveals. 'He's a director that knows precisely every little atom on his frame.'

'He's a formidable type of character because he knows what he sees in his mind and wants that vision to be executed perfectly', Scarlett adds, as Luc admits that he thinks his technique works so well because he doesn't cut. '[The actors] appreciate that a lot because all this part before action is where they have to prep and if they have to do that every thirty seconds, it's just exhausting for them', he says.

Chef Review

Very Good

Like comfort food, this movie has very little nutritional value, but it sure goes down smoothly. This is one of those shamelessly delicious-looking films that makes our mouths water at the tasty dishes that are lovingly created on-camera. And it also has an array of deeply likeable characters, witty cameos and sparkling dialogue to keep us smiling. So who cares that nothing unexpected happens from start to finish? This is a movie we sit back and enjoy without worrying about the appearance of a plot twist.

The title character is Carl (played by writer-director Jon Favreau), the chef at a top Los Angeles restaurant that is stuck in a rut because the owner (Dustin Hoffman) refuses to change anything on the menu. When a snooty food critic (Oliver Platt) criticises Carl for his tired and predictable cuisine, Carl's reaction sparks an angry Twitter war. In a fit of anger, Carl quits his job then hatches a plan to get back to his roots while bonding with Percy (Emjay Anthony), his pre-teen son with spicy ex-wife Inez (Sofia Vergara). So Carl and his sidekick Martin (John Leguizamo) take Percy to Miami to refurbish food truck and drive back to California, along the way building a reputation and perfecting their Latin-infused menu.

Since a complex plot would just be distracting, this film coasts on the charisma of its likeable cast, throwing in lively side roles for the likes of Scarlett Johansson as a restaurant colleague, Bobby Cannavale as a fellow chef and most memorably Robert Downey Jr. as Inez's hilariously nutty ex. Everyone is relaxed and effortlessly funny, which makes the interaction feel amusing and never remotely forced. While this is easily Favreau's most assured work as a director (that's including the first two Iron Man movies), this is also his most generous performance too. He infuses the whole film with easy-going charm.

Scarlett Johansson Finds Nickname 'Insulting', These Other Celebs Don't Seem To Mind

Scarlett Johansson Brad Pitt Kristen Stewart Angelina Jolie Jennifer Lopez Jennifer Lawrence

These days it seems as though fame is cemented when the world refers to you by your very own portmanteau. Over the past few years it’s become a way of referring to our favourite celebs, because in the texting generation don’t nobody gots time to say their full names. Think J-Lo, K-Stew, J-Law, ScarJo, the list goes on. Except ScarJo wants her name taken off the list, because, well, she’s apparently above all that. Apparently starring in a Marvel movie franchise qualifies you as a serious actress, Meryl Streep style. Or MezStree as we like to call her. And she freaking loves it.

Scarlett Johansson, or ScarJo as we like to call her (and which is how she shall forever forth be referred) explained to Glamour magazine, “I associate that name with, like, pop stars. It’s lazy and flippant…There’s something insulting about it.”  Well, that's certainly very diplomatic and won't potentially insult anybody.  Nice work, ScarJo!  ScarJo ScarJo ScarJo.

Since then, Johansson has kept relatively quiet about their split, but in two new recent interviews she explained what going through a divorce has taught her.

'Chef' Trailer: Do Not Watch While Hungry [Trailer + Pictures]

Jon Favreau Scarlett Johansson Dustin Hoffman Sofia Vergara

You know the supermarket rule – don’t go food shopping when you’re hungry? Well the same applies to watching the trailer for Jon Favreau’s Chef. The beautifully shot, beautifully prepared food will have you attempting a rare venison sandwich with horseradish foam and wild rocket puree, and we all know that can’t happen.

Chef movieIt's all about the food in 'Chef'

The story for ‘Chef’ sees Carl Casper (Favreau) given an ultimatum: cook Dustin Hoffman’s menu or don’t cook in his restaurant. Of course, the film would be pretty boring if he went ahead gave in to his mean boss, so instead he decides to fall off the wagon somewhat, become the laughing stock of an already snobbish culinary zeitgeist, and win back his respect and friends through an intrepid street food venture.

Carl Casper is a chef working at one of the top restaurants of Miami. Food is his ultimate passion in life and so he is utterly heartbroken when his boss forces him to cook a 'safer' menu, bypassing his usually ambitious creations. The change came about when it was found that a formidable food critic would be visiting the establishment, but, as it turns out, the menu switch was a bad idea and Carl doesn't take his subsequent criticism very well at all. After reading his bad review and going viral, he sends out a badly judged post over Twitter and is thus forced to leave his post at the eatery. Instead, he sets up his own food truck, delivering his food on wheels to anyone willing to try a new culinary experience, and along the way uses it to reconnect with his young son and ex-wife.

'Chef' is brilliant comedy about self-discovery, passion and drive. The movie's main star, Primetime Emmy nominated Jon Favreau ('Cowboys & Aliens', 'Iron Man', 'Elf', 'Zathura: A Space Adventure'), was also responsible for the direction, production and screenplay and it made its premiere at the SXSW Film Festival in March. It is due for UK release on June 18th 2014.

She wakes up after some hours in a strange room feeling groggy and is informed by a crime boss that she has had drugs implanted into her abdomen for transportation. She is held hostage and chained up, but during a particularly heated confrontation with one of her captors, she takes a blow to the stomach causing the parcel of drugs to leak into her system. As the drugs take hold of her, she starts to feel alert, agile and strongly tolerant of pain. She has the drugs removed from her stomach at the hospital but she has already absorbed enough that she can somewhere take in all information around her and remember it, as well as instantly change her appearance and move objects and people with mind control. With her brain already at the superhuman stage, Lucy starts to worry that she has no humanity left.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Review

Very Good

This is the Marvel movie that divides the fans from the casual filmgoers, as the movies become more like a TV series in which the world is saved from disaster every week. While it's shot and acted to an unusually high standard, the script treats the characters like pawns to throw at each other rather than real human beings. So while it's hugely entertaining, there isn't a hint of actual tension or suspense.

Now settling into life in the 21st century, super-powered soldier Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) and his cohort Natasha (Scarlett Johansson) are horrified when the mysterious, seemingly indestructible Winter Soldier launches an attack on Shield Director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) on the streets of Washington DC. Suspected of being on the wrong side, Steve and Natasha set out to find out what's up, drafting in angry veteran Sam (Anthony Mackie) and his whizzy flying-wings accessory. Meanwhile, Shield boss Pierce (Robert Redford) is carrying on with launching a wildly heavy-handed security system for America.

Marvel show-runner Kevin Feige works hard to make these movies fit loosely into the overarching mythology while standing on their own. But this is the ninth time these superheroes have had to save the world since 2008's Iron Man, and it's getting a bit tired. This chapter introduces a perviously unseen darkness in the evil agency Hydra, but the real innovation here is the use of gritty Bourne-style direction for the lucid action sequences.

'Under The Skin' Is Remarkable, So Why Was It Booed At The Premiere?

Scarlett Johansson

At the peak of her success, Scarlett Johansson made the startling decision to play a man-eating alien in the tiny Scottish thriller Under the Skin. Hot off Marvel blockbusters like Iron Man and The Avengers, she played a prowling killer roaming the streets of Glasgow. Shot with hidden cameras and extras who didn't know they were in the movie, the film also required her to get naked on-screen for the first time.

Notoriously private, Johansson knew that this film was something special. "It's not like I want to be displaying myself all over the place, but I think I that through the process of just letting go I realised what kind of judgment I place on myself," she says. "That wasn't just the nudity, but many different situations where I wasn't totally free of myself. So it was very liberating."

Under The Skin Review

Extraordinary

Scarlett Johansson goes off the radar in this low-budget Scottish thriller, which is far more offbeat than anything she's ever done before. Her fans are likely to be perplexed by the film's lack of any meaningful dialog, its ambiguous plot and relentlessly artful imagery. But inventive filmmaker Jonathan Glazer (Sexy Beast) has created one of the most atmospheric sci-fi horror movies in recent memory.

Just outside Glasgow, an alien creature assumes the shape of a woman (Johansson) and starts prowling the city streets in search of men. With disarming flirtation, she sparks the sexual appetites of a series of guys, luring them into her inky lair, where they're trapped like bugs in a roach motel. But some unexpected events get her thinking about human sexuality, so she decides to explore it herself. With the next guy, she has a go at romance, and then later she puts herself into a startlingly vulnerable situation. But by going off the grid, she alerts her alien cohorts that something isn't quite right.

By refusing to use standard storytelling or filmmaking techniques, Glazer has made a movie that feels like it comes from outer space. But while we never get a grip on any of the characters, we can easily identify with the yearning emotions they're feeling. Which draws us in on a deeper level than we expect. In this respect, Johansson's performance is unusually subdued. Setting her glamorous Hollywood image aside, she becomes a lost soul who almost looks frumpy (she's still gorgeous enough to get any man she wants), and her search for meaning in human sexuality is fascinating.
