Tributes Pour In For Gene Wilder Who Has Died Aged 83

Gene Wilder Mel Brooks Jim Carrey Steve Martin Sarah Silverman

Tributes have poured in for actor and writer Gene Wilder who has died aged 83. Wilder’s death was announced by his family on Monday, who revealed he had been secretly battling Alzheimer’s for three years. After news of his passing broke, friends, colleagues and fellow comedians paid tribute on social media, with many referencing his most famous role as Willy Wonka in Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory.

Mel Brooks, who directed Wilder in comedies Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein, lead the tributes on Twitter, saying the actor and writer had ‘ blessed’ him with his friendship. “One of the truly great talents of our time,” Brooks wrote. “He blessed every film we did with his magic & he blessed me with his friendship.”

Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping Review

Excellent

An astute satire of the pop music business, this raucous mock-documentary is consistently hilarious from start to finish. Some of the jokes are corny, but everything about this movie has a point to make about fame and the music industry. The songs are jaw-droppingly wacky, as is the constant string of big-name cameos. And it's anchored on a riotously funny performance by Andy Samberg.

He plays Connor, formerly one-third of the boy band Style Boyz, alongside his childhood friends Owen (Jorma Taccone) and Lawrence (Akica Schaffer). When Conner decided to go solo, Owen tagged along with him as his deejay, while Lawrence angrily left to become a farmer. But sales of Connor's new album are wobbling, and with 32 people on his personal payroll, he needs to bring in the cash. After a marketing scheme to upload his music to kitchen appliances backfires, he heads out on his Connquest world tour, supported by unhinged singer Hunter (Chris Redd). But Owen thinks that what Connor really needs is to make up with Lawrence, and bring the Boyz back together again.

Samberg is perfect as the too-cute musician who believes all the hype and doesn't have a clue what's really happening around him. Even in his ignorance, Connor is hugely likeable, because he never means to be cruel. This makes his interaction with the people around him thoroughly engaging, and often laugh-out-loud funny, from Sarah Silverman's PR guru to Tim Meadows' enthusiastic manager to Maya Rudolph's kitchen appliance queen. Joan Cusack has some marvellous moments as his dotty mum, while Imogen Poots gets the film's best sequence as the "official" girlfriend he proposes to complete with an ill-advised pack of wolves and live music by Seal. And then there's Justin Timberlake as Connor's singing chef.

Sarah Silverman "Almost Died" After Spending Five Days In Hospital With Serious Throat Condition

Sarah Silverman

American comedian Sarah Silverman has revealed that she came close to death after falling ill with a “freak” health condition affecting her throat, which led her to spend five days in the ICU last week.

The 45 year old actress and TV star, a ‘Saturday Night Live’ alum and the star of her own Comedy Central show from 2007 to 2010, shared with her fans in a Facebook post that she’s “lucky to be alive” after being hospitalised with a case of epiglottitis, a swelling that affects the cartilage that covers the windpipe, blocking the flow of air into the lungs.

Lena Dunham, Bryan Cranston, Sarah Hyland: Best Pictures From The Emmys 2014

Sarah Hyland Lena Dunham Bryan Cranston Emmy Awards Sarah Silverman

In an Emmy Awards that most agree was a stone-cold classic, AMC's meth-drama 'Breaking Bad' was the big winner, taking home most of the night's major TV awards including the big one: outstanding drama series. Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Anna Gunn all took home acting gongs, leaving a couple of big, big players - Matthew McConaughey, Kevin Spacey, Woody Harrelson - going home with nothing.

Cranston probably deserved his Emmy for meth dealer Walter White in Breaking Bad's final season, though some raised eyebrows at the snubbing of McConaughey given his faultless performance as Rust Cohle in HBO's 'True Detective'. The current recipient of the Oscar for best actor was nevertheless in high spirits and was the butt of several jokes given his status as one of the world's best. "You don't belong here," said Jimmy Kimmel at one point, "And take Julia Roberts with you."

A Million Ways To Die In The West - Redband Trailer

Albert is a sheep farmer who, unlike most men in his small Arizona town, is unable to handle a gun and tries to avoid confrontation at every opportunity. He gets dumped by his girlfriend for his spinelessness - but as a passive individual, he's still one of the luckiest guys in his neighbourhood having so far avoided death. This is a town where the residents are constantly in danger at every corner, but Albert finds his inner strength at the arrival of an attractive and feisty new resident who is willing to death him how to fire a pistol and stand up to his adversaries. And it's just as well when a dangerous outlaw shows up and starts to try and run the town, revealing that he is the husband of Albert's new female friend. Could his luck be up this time?

A host of pun-tastic and risqué posters has been released ahead of the release of Seth Macfarlane's new comedy western, A Million Way To Die In The West. Starring Amanda Seyfried, Sarah Silverman, Neil Patrick Harris, Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron, Giovanni Ribisi, and MacFarlane himself, the movie certainly pulls no punches when it comes to rounding up a killer cast.

As well as directing, co-writing and producing the comedy, Seth also takes on the role of cowardly sheep farmer Albert. After Albert backs out of a gunfight, his fickle girlfriend (Seyfried) leaves him for another man. However, the farmer hadn't counted on a mysterious and beautiful woman (Theron) riding into town, who helps him find his courage.

Monty Python Reunion

Dead Parrot's alive! Like David Bowie's comeback in January, we were stunned this week when the surviving members of Monty Python announced they would be reuniting for a special-one off stage show at London's O2 Arena. Find out why John Cleese will not be doing the funny walk.

Jennifer's on fire! Ok so we always knew The Hunger Games: Catching Fire would probably outdo the original at the box-office, though what we didn't expect was that the teen franchise flick would be critically acclaimed. Of course, it could have all been very different - check out the alternative Hunger Games cast here.

Sarah Silverman's New HBO Standup Slammed By Critic For "Veering Into Bad-Taste Territory"

Sarah Silverman

Comedienne Sarah Silverman is 42, and with several successful standups, TV shows and webseries under her belt, she is now releasing her first ever HBO standup comedy special, We Are Miracles. Obviously, the lady is doing something right, succeeding in a male dominated field and all that. Even so, one critic, writing for Variety, seems to disagree, hinting that the comedienne, whose performances are often very explicit, should tone it down a bit.

Sarah Silverman, 2013 CNN Heroes
Career-wise, Silverman is in peak form at the moment.

We’ll try not to use the word “sexist” too early, but according to Brian Lowry, Silverman has “limited herself by appearing determined to prove she can be as dirty and distasteful as the boys” in her new special, set to premiere on November 23. Because, you know, women can’t naturally have a raunchy sense of humor or anything.

Jimmy Kimmel and Molly McNearey married earlier this year.

Kimmel introduced his guest by focussing primarily on her comedy career, with a small reference to how "there's nothing awkward about her being here." However, Silverman immediately forced the conversation on to their seven year long relationship by presenting Kimmel with an unconventional guest gift: a box of his old things. Kimmel looked distinctly uncomfortable but dealt with the situation surprisingly well.

Sarah Silverman Braves The Critics And Posts Failed NBC Pilot Online

Sarah Silverman Jeff Goldblum

You win some, you lose some – the latter has been the case for Sarah Silverman’s Susan 313 pilot. The show was to be picked up by NBC...until it wasn’t. The plot is fairly simple, though we trust that with Ms Silverman’s comedic ability, it could have been a smash success. 313 centers around Susan Farrow (Silverman), a recently single woman moving back into her old apartment building. It also stars (or starred, anyway) Tig Notaro, actress/Casey Wilson’s writing partner June Diane Raphael, and Harris Wittels, the Parks and Recreation writer. Oh, and there’s also Jeff Goldblum. We can’t imagine what went wrong there.

Sarah Silverman, The Walking Dead Screening
Silverman wasn't a sore loser.

It could have been a much needed breath of fresh air, a primetime female-driven comedy for NBC, unfortunately now the series will never get made. The good news is that fans of the comedienne will at least get to see the pilot, courtesy of Ms Silverman’s own YouTube channel. And yes, it is pretty funny. Any show, which features a Wreck-It-Ralph reference within its first minute must be worth its salt.

P Diddy "Revolts" Against The Rise Of Online Media By Launching New Music Channel

Sean Combs Sarah Silverman

P. Diddy has been silent in the way of new music for a few years, which in today’s climate translates as about a century. However the rapper/producer/entrepreneur is coming back with a new venture – a brand new music channel, Revolt, targeting that oh-so-precious 13-33 demo, also referred to as the rather strained and unpleasant term Millennials.

'According to Diddy’s recent comment at the TCA Conference in LA, quoted via The Independent, young people are flocking to the internet for entertainment, but that’s only because “there just isn't anything engaging on TV."

Seth MacFarlane Reunites With Universal For His Second Directorial Effort For The Big Screen

Seth Macfarlane Charlize Theron Liam Neeson Amanda Seyfried Sarah Silverman

As the anticipation for his sophomore film effort builds, Seth McFarlane reunites with Universal to co-write, direct, produce and star in A Million Ways to Die in the West. The studio has just recently come aboard to finance and distribute the western, but it isn’t exactly a risky bid for them, after McFarlane’s big screen debut Ted, starring Mark Wahlberg opposite an animated potty-mouthed teddy bear, became an international smash success and grossed $549 million worldwide. Obviously Hollywood is impressed with McFarlane’s work on Ted, as well as the animated series Family Guy and American Dad! because the writer managed to score some extremely coveted actors to fill the cast of Ways to Die. The list includes Charlize Theron, Liam Neeson, Amanda Seyfried, Sarah Silverman and Giovanni Ribisi.

According to Reuters, via Yahoo News, the film will tell the story of a sheep farmer named Albert. And no, the exact premise isn’t known yet, but we mostly have faith in McFarlane’s ability to make this vastly unappealing premise somehow interesting. Plus, a lot of the creators of Ted – notably, producers Scott Stuber and Jason Clark and co-writers Wellesley Wild and Alec Sulkin – have been drafted in to work on this, so, barring some inevitable for this team crude jokes and cheap laughs, A Million Ways To Die In The West sounds like a pretty promising production. The film is due to be released on May 30, 2014 across American theatres. And for those of you eagerly awaiting Ted 2, do not fret – that’s almost inevitable in the future too, as Universal has bought the rights to both films.

Sarah Silverman And Michael Cera Launch 'Jash' Comedy At SXSW

Sarah Silverman South by Southwest

Comedienne Sarah Silverman and actor Michael Cera launched the new YouTube comedy network 'Jash' with sketch duo Tim Heidecker and Eric Wareheim and rap-comic Reggie Watts at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, Texas, on Sunday (March 10, 2013). The high profile foursome jumped at the chance to start-up the network after being approached by Google to produce comedy material for a new online source.

"We each have pages within Jash and we each can curate those pages," Silverman told the Hollywood Reporter at the Texan festival, "This is what we think is funny. It may not be your cup of tea, but there's no testing involved, there's no second-guessing of what a 14-year-old boy would like. It's just a place to do stuff and fail or not fail." The group is already hard at work on material to fill Jash's pages, with Silverman preparing a "French film noir trailer" while Cera - fresh from working on Netflix's Arrested Development revival - is creating a 25 minute short film.

With the talent in place, Jash has called in the heavyweights to pull the levers backstage. Douglas De Lucas - a co-executive producer on Jimmy Kimmel Live! - and Daniel Kellison, the creator of Crank, Yankers and The Man Show, will oversee things.

Sarah Silverman's Sister Arrested At Western Wall For Women's Protest

Sarah Silverman

Sarah Silverman’s sister was amongst a group of women detained in Jerusalem, for praying at a Jewish holy site, dressed in garb normally reserved for men. Susan Silverman, along with Anat Hoffman and others, are members of a liberal group named Women of the Wall, who go to the Western Wall once a month to pray and, according to Associated Press, “conduct certain rituals, such as wearing prayer shawls and skullcaps and singing out loud;” all practises normally reserved for men, under the rules of strict Orthodox Jewish groups.

Sarah Silverman was outspoken in her praise for her sister, saying she was “SO proud” of her sister’s civil disobedience. Sarah Silverman being Sarah Silverman, though, her full message was a little more colourful than that, saying “SO proud of my amazing sister @rabbisusan & niece @purplelettuce95 for their ballsout civil disobedience. Ur the tits! #womenofthewall.” Hoffman, who is the group’s chairwoman, said of the arrest “this is just attrition, they want the group to become frightened.”

The detentions took place on Monday, when 300 people gathered at the Western Wall during a prayer service, to protest the Orthodox control of the site. There were around 10 male supporters present, including veterans from the paratroopers’ battalion. Hoffman confirmed that none of those arrested had been charged with any formal crime.

Wreck-it Ralph Review

Very Good

Visually ambitious and packed with inside jokes for arcade gamers, this colourful animated adventure is an enjoyable romp but is probably too energetic for its own good. It simply never settles down so that we can sink into its various settings or get to know its lively characters. So in the end we've enjoyed the talent of the animators and the vocal cast, but we feel rather exhausted.

The story is set in a vintage 1980s arcade game called Fix-it Felix Jr, in which Felix (voiced by McBrayer) must repair damage inflicted by Ralph's (Reilly)massive fists. But after 30 years, Ralph is tired of being the unloved villain. He wants to be the good guy for a change, so heads across the room into another game, the combat role-play adventure Hero's Duty. There he's trained by tough-talking squadron leader Calhoun (Lynch) and battles space insects to win a medal and escape. But a killer bug follows him into the candy-themed road-race game Sugar Rush, threatening the balance of the whole arcade.

The majority of the plot takes place here, as Ralph teams up with unloved "glitch" Vanellope to challenge the smiling tyrant King Candy (Tudyk). Unlike the pixellated Fix-it Felix Jr and the virtual reality of Hero's Duty, Sugar Rush is a pink-hued, delicious-looking land of sugary treats. Each of these games, and the transfer station between them, is populated by spirited characters with their own subplots. And there are also appearances by iconic favourites such as Pac-Man, Mario and Q*bert. So with the different animation styles and eclectic ensemble of characters, our eyes aren't bored for a second.

Pitch Perfect Star Rebel Wilson To Host MTV Movie Awards 2013

Rebel Wilson Sarah Silverman Russell Brand Amy Poehler Tina Fey Lindsay Lohan Jessica Alba

Rebel Wilson, the comedy actress currently starring in Pitch Perfect, will host the 2013 MTV Movie Awards, the network announced in a first look trailer on Thursday (December 20, 2012). Set to air on April 14, Wilson will become the first woman to host the event since Sarah Silverman emceed in 2007.

Female comedians are taking over next year's awards' ceremonies, with Amy Poehler and Tina Fey tasked with hosting the Golden Globes. The MTV Awards sometimes get it right with their hosts (Russell Brand, Andy Samberg, Sarah Silverman, Will Smith), though often get it very, very, wrong. Lindsay Lohan hosted in 2004, while Jessica Alba didn't exactly set the show alight in 2006. Anyway, Wilson - as the comedy actress of the moment - seems a pretty solid choice. The Australian played Brynn in the smash-hit Bridesmaids and went on to star in A Few Best Men, What To Expect When You're Expecting, and Pitch Perfect. She's currently writing a comedy named Super Fun for the ABC Network, and stars alongside Mark Wahlberg and Dwayne Johnson in the action-comedy Pain & Gain.

The 2012 MTV Movie Awards was held at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Los Angeles in June. It was dominated by The Hunger Games, Twilight and Bridesmaids.

Wreck-It Ralph Appears To Be Disney's Latest Success Story

John C Reilly Sarah Silverman

Wreck-it Ralph, the new computer-animated comedy from Disney, has received storming reviews ahead of its release this week. The movie, featuring the voices of John C. Reilly and Sarah Silverman, tells the story of an arcade game villain who rebels against his role as a 'baddie' and dreams of becoming a hero.

Noted critic Roger Ebert suggested Disney has got it right yet again, writing, "The art design and color palette of "Wreck-It Ralph" permit unlimited sets, costumes and rules, giving the movie tireless originality and different behavior in every different cyber word." Variety's Peter Debruge also showered the film with praise, writing, "There are a staggering number of rules governing the gameplay in Wreck-It Ralph, and one of the toon's greatest pleasures comes in how intuitively audiences discover those parameters as the story unfolds." As is often perfectly judged by Disney, family movies need to provide as much for adults as they do for children, (see Toy Story) and Justin Lowe of the Hollywood Reporter spoke of Wreck-It Ralph's ability to carry this off with aplomb. "With a mix of retro eye-candy for grown-ups and a thrilling, approachable storyline for the tykes, the film casts a wide and beguiling net," he wrote.

As has been widely reported, Disney completed its takeover of LucasFilm this week, signalling its intention to release several new Star Wars movies.

Jewish comedienne Sarah Silverman is questioned by paparazzi about her dad's recent feud with an orthodox rabbi who had criticised her in an open letter online. She then went on to express sympathy for the rabbi. 'That comes from an unhappiness in yourself, right? When you started getting obsessed with a stranger and how they decide to have their life', she said.

Take This Waltz Review

Excellent
After the remarkable Away From Her, actress-turned-filmmaker Polley is back with another bracingly observant drama, this time exploring the point where relationships cease to be something new. The film is a bit indulgent and downbeat, but it speaks so eloquently that we can't help but be moved.

In Toronto, Margot (Williams) is happily married to Lou (Rogen), but she feels that their relationship is only expressed through humour and that work interests divide them. So it's not surprising that, after a chance encounter with neighbour Daniel (Kirby), Margot starts to consider straying from her marriage. She holds Daniel at arm's length, but is intrigued by everything that's new about him, including his more adult way of talking about sex and relationships. Is taking this leap scarier than waiting around for her marriage to come back to life?

Sarah Silverman: Jesus Is Magic Review

Good
Sarah Silverman: Jesus is Magic is like sweet, feature-length revenge for the relatively small,l but almost assuredly scarred, minority of comics and actors who didn't quite make it on Saturday Night Live. Indeed, my first exposure to Silverman was as a teenage fan of SNL, weathering a mid-nineties bad patch; she was funny, with her gee-whiz energy and off-kilter delivery, but the show didn't know what to do with her, and she was off within a year.

She then opted to write her own ticket, returning to stand-up, making occasional film appearances, and honing Jesus is Magic, the one-woman mostly-stand-up show, now available as a feature film. The film version combines her standup act with a handful of cutaways to songs and skits. A few of her comic buddies make appearances, but as Silverman informs us during the opening number, the film is really about her, and only her.

The Aristocrats Review

Excellent
In the dark weeks following 9/11, Comedy Central's management surprisingly decided not to cancel its taping of The Friar's Club Roast of Hugh Hefner. During the recording of the event, hundreds of comedians and urban luminaries found themselves shocked out of their post-terrorism pall by none other than Gilbert Gottfried, who delivered what the New York Times' Frank Rich, an attendee of the taping, called "the greatest dirty joke ever told."

Compare any two-minute clip of his new comedy "School of Rock" to any of his scenes from "Orange County," "Shallow Hal" or "Saving Silverman," and you'll see the exact same tongue-wagging and eye-bugging mugging, the exact same frenzied, finger-knotting gestures and roly-poly, off-balance dancing, the exact same eyebrow-stitching failed attempts at momentary sincerity, and the exact same set-devouring dialogue delivery.

"Read between the lines, baby! Read between the lines!" he whispers then screams, whispers then screams while giving a three-fingered flip-off to the musicians who have just kicked the embarrassing stage-hog out of their band in this movie's establishing scene.
