Sarah Hyland, the American actress whose hit comedy 'Modern Family' scooped five awards during Sunday evening's Emmy's, has apologised for branding Lea Michele's red carpet routine "very strange". Hyland made the comments while appearing on Joan Rivers E! show 'Fashion Police'.
The actress, who plays Haley Dunphy in ABC's hit comedy series, mocked Michele for her unusual poses at the recent premiere of 'Glee: The 3D Concert Movie', saying, "She puts her hands on her hips like this and sticks out her collar bones ... to make her look skinnier. It's very strange". Hyland claimed she "didn't know what to do" while Michele was striking the poses and that the situation was "very awkward" because she'd never seen anything like it before. The comments caused outrage on Twitter, with supporters of Michele coming to the actress's aid. Hyland later tweeted the Glee star directly, saying, "this is all so stupid. It was meant to be humorous, not hurtful. Let's talk. I'll see you tonight?", however, Michele never replied to the tweet. Speaking at last night's Emmy Awards, Hyland apologised to Lea while speaking to E! News, saying, "They are very protective of her, and I didn't mean it in any harm at all. When Joan Rivers asks, What does she look like on the red carpet? you do it!"
Hyland and the 'Modern Family' cast were nominated for 17 Emmy's in total, scooping five of them. The show's success led host Jane Lynch to remark, "Welcome back to the Modern Family awards".
