Sara Gilbert broke the news of her engagement to rocker Linda Perry live on her chat show 'The Talk'.
The 38-year-old actress - known for her role as Darlene Conner-Healy in the sitcom Rosanne - was proposed to by her rock musician girlfriend during a romantic picnic in Los Angeles.
She explained: ''We have food and we're eating it, it's really sweet and there's this guy sitting playing guitar, like a street musician, and he starts playing this song that we love, that's kind of popular right now ...
''Suddenly the people picnicking next to us pull out string instruments from under the blanket and walk over and they start playing 'Love Song' [by The Cure]. And then a trombone and a saxophone start.''
Former 4 Non Blondes rocker Linda, 47, finally popped the question by donning five T-shirts successively, each with a single word emblazoned on it, forming the phrase 'Will you marry me?'
Sara responded: ''Yeah, after that spectacle!''
Linda invited both their mother and a few friends to watch the proposal, and also invited John Waite to serenade them with 'Missing You' - a song of special meaning to the couple.
Sara has two children - a son, Levi, 8, and a daughter, Sawyer, 5 -
with her previous partner, TV producer Alison Adler.
Sara also thanked her co-hosts and audience for their support on the issue of gay marriage.
