Saoirse Ronan helped an assistant director win $40 (£25) on the set of The Host after crewmembers placed bets on whether the Irish actress would agree to take part in a scary stunt.

The Atonement star was asked to jump off a high balcony for her role in the new sci-fi film, and members of the crew put money down on her reaction.

Ronan agreed to complete the daring feat, and later found out she helped an assistant director win $40 (£25).

She tells the Boston Herald, "There was one stunt where I had to jump off a balcony. The second Ad (assistant director) came up to me and said, 'It's completely safe and we're going to put you in a harness, but if you don't want to do it, it's completely fine.'

"I said I wanted to do it so they could get as many shots as possible and she said, 'Oh good!' because the whole Ad team had a bet that I wouldn't do it because it was so high up. And she was the only one who thought I would! So she won 40 bucks."
